What is summarizing? It's a process of condensing, or shortening, a reading selection while preserving its overall meaning.

Reasons to make summaries!! To explore your understanding of a reading. To demonstrate your understanding of the course reading. To establish the ideas that your essay will evaluate or analyze. To inform the reader. To extract the main ideas ( the points that you think are most important ) To distinguish between main points& secondary details.

Guidelines for writing a summary: Read the text carefully, to understand its purpose & structure. 2. Determine the significance of each idea & the way it's linked to other ideas and examples 3. Decide what you are going to include in your summary & what you are going to leave out.

4. Group the essential information & ideas you have selected in an order that shows the relationships of ideas & facts. 5. Write a sentence that reveals what the whole section is about. 6. Identify author & title if you are summarizing an entire essay or article)
