Environmental protection expenditure - Supply-side estimates in the UK Rocky Harris Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) United Kingdom rocky.harris@defra.gsi.gov.uk

Constitutional background UK has 12 broad administrative areas 3 Devolved Administrations (Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland) 9 English Regions Each area has responsibility for promoting economic development

Study of Environmental Goods and Services (EGS) sector Each region was asked to provide a list of companies and addresses assessed to be within the sector These lists were matched against the national business register in order to obtain details of NACE sector, turnover and employment

Results 17,000 companies in EGS sector in 2004 400,000 employees Turnover of 40 billion euros Equal in size to aerospace and defence sectors But ….

How does this compare with the UK demand side? Demand Euro billion Industry 5 Public sector 8 Households 3? Exports ? Agriculture/commerce ? Total 16-20? Supply Euro billion Env industry total output 40 Plus imports ? Less non-environmental part of integrated processes 2 Less secondary production ? Total ?? - ??

Questions Have other Members States attempted to measure the supply side? Have they found similar disparities? To what extent do definitional issues (secondary production, integrated processes, exclusion of energy efficiency investments) account for the differences?
