The Concept of Democracy

Democracy… Deals with individual freedoms as well as equality and social justice.

Basic Principles of Democracy; Citizens must be able to make themselves understood in the decision making process. I.e.) Braille, language translations, Lobby groups Public Forums

They must all be treated in an equal manner.

They must all have their basic rights and freedoms

They must feel a sense of responsibility towards other members of their community.

They must have a sense of social justice.

Government representatives listen to everyone with the same attention and make decisions in the interest of the majority.

One can say what one wants and thinks without being afraid of punishment by the government.

No one receives favourable treatment.

Minorities receive the same treatment as the majority.

One takes into account the needs and abilities of each individual.

One can argue… That democracy exists in a struggle between individual rights and freedoms and the collective rights and freedoms. Reflect on this statement and determine which set of rights YOU believe to be more important.
