Today’s Goals Review Day by Day/ Worst week ever Watch the 1996 Version for Act 2 Review Tomorrow: Read Shakespeare’s Act 3 Scene 1 at line 15 Observe multiple productions of this scene

Worst Week Ever: Sunday- Scene i- Capulet servants and Montague servants start a street fight, which is joined by Benvolio (Montague) and Tybalt (Capulet). Prince Escalus declares a death penalty for further feuding between the two families. Romeo we learn is lovesick; Rosaline, the object of his affections will not requite (return) his love. His friend Benvolio tells Romeo to look at other girls...

Sunday Later (scene ii) Lord Capulet and Paris talk about arranging a marriage to Juliet. Romeo and Benvolio learn that Rosaline has been invited to a party at the Capulet house. Benvolio suggests crashing the party so that Romeo can see that the other women are more beautiful than Rosaline is.

Sunday Evening ( Act 1 iii, iv, v) Lady Capulet discusses the idea of marriage to Paris with Juliet. Juliet keeps her options open. The Nurse wishes Juliet every possible happiness... Meanwhile Mercutio attempts to cheer a lovesick Romeo up, telling him to be rough with love if need be. At the Capulet's party, Romeo who is disguised by a masque (mask), falls in love with Juliet on sight. Capulet stops Tybalt from attacking Romeo at his party, telling him there will be other opportunities. Both Romeo and Juliet learn that they are each enemies of the other's family... A Prologue sung by a choir dramatizes the conflict both Romeo and Juliet feel between their love for one another and their loyalty to their respective families.

Sunday Night (Act 2 scene 1 &2) Romeo gives Mercutio and Benvolio the slip Ignoring the danger, Romeo scales the Capulet's wall to be near Juliet, the woman he cannot forget... Unnoticed in Juliet's orchard, Romeo learns of Juliet's love for him. After declaring their feelings for each other, the two decide to marry. Juliet will send Romeo a messenger in the morning to make plans for their wedding...

Monday Morning (Act 2 Scene 3) The very next day, we meet Romeo's friend, Friar Laurence. He wonders how Romeo can forget Rosaline so quickly but agrees to marry the two since he hopes this marriage it will end the long running Montague / Capulet feud...

Monday Afternoon (Act 2 Scene 4) Romeo catches up with his friends Mercutio and Benvolio. Benvolio and Mercutio are still looking for Romeo because Tybalt is planning to challenge Romeo to a duel. Juliet's messenger, the Nurse, arrives and the wedding is set for later that day. The Nurse promises to get Romeo "cords" or ropes which will allow Romeo to climb into Juliet's bedchamber as her husband later that night...

Monday Afternoon ( Act 2 Scene 5 and 6) Juliet is upset that the Nurse is taking so long. The Nurse delivers Romeo's message. Romeo and Juliet meet at Friar Laurence's cell and get married.

Monday Afternoon (act 3 Scene 1) Benvolio and Mercutio are hanging out as usual, trading insults and mocking the Capulets. Nothing better to do than make fun of the people who hate you. Tybalt shows up, who is trying to find Romeo so he can get back at him for crashing the Capulet party. Didn’t wait around did he? Let’s see, last night he caught Romeo, this morning the letter, and now he’s on the hunt. Sheesh.

Monday Afternoon (act 3 Scene 1) Tybalt provokes Mercutio by making fun of Romeo. Mercutio responds, and makes fun of Tybalt Benvolio, who wants everyone to be friends, warns the guys not to fight in public. And then in stroll the just-married Romeo. Insults are exchanged, but Romeo remembers that Tybalt is his new wife's cousin, so he turns the other cheek.

Monday Afternoon (act 3 Scene 1) Mercutio finds this totally shocking—actually dishonorable— so he offers to fight Tybalt instead. So they fight. Quite literary, the text says “they fight”. All the imagination for the fight scene must happen in your head (as a reader) and performed on stage. Romeo tries to intervene and stop it, but Tybalt then stabs Mercutio under Romeo’s arm!!!!

Monday Afternoon (act 3 Scene 1) Romeo and Benvolio assume that Mercutio hasn't been badly hurt because he starts joking about his wound— but it's no joke. He's dying. He then gives us the famous line, "A plague on both your houses," and then turns to BFF Romeo and says, "Why the devil came you between us? I was hurt under your arm," he says. A minute later, he is dead. Romeo blames himself for Mercutio's death and laments that his love for "sweet Juliet" "hath made [him] effeminate" [a girly wimp]. So, he decides to man up. By challenging Tybalt to a duel. … what will happen next???

Act 3 Scene 1 (continued) 2/22

Today’s Goals Summarize Act 3 scene 1 Watch Act 3 scene 1 1996 version You will need: DAY BY DAY worksheet Watch Act 3 scene 1 1996 version You will need: ACT 3 SCENE 1- the 11 questions sheet I gave you yesterday After the movie, recap by answering those 11 questions.

Monday Afternoon (act 3 Scene 1) After Tybalt kills Romeo’s best friend, Romeo goes after Tybalt with a vengeance. He manages to kill Tybalt. #slaybrother Wait… he just killed his cousin… b/c like, he just married Juliet… like a few hours ago… woops #mybad #revenge Romeo stands in disbelief of what he’s done #facepalm Benvolio forces him to run away before the prince comes and tries to kill Romeo News spreads fast in Verona… Romeo’s parents learn of Mercutio’s death, and Juliet’s parents learn of Tybalt’s death. They go to the prince for help.

Monday Afternoon (act 3 Scene 1) (yes, it’s still Monday… a lot can happen on a Monday) Prince is furious that his family member (Mercutio) has been killed However, the Capulet’s demand that Romeo should be killed for killing Tybalt Prince says “a life for a life” Since Romeo did what the law would have done, Romeo has been banished. Yeah… so banishment not so horrible today, but back then, like you weren’t allowed to ever come back to the city. Everything Romeo knew ($$$, house, babes, friends) all was in Verona. He now will be homeless, shunned, and won’t be able to be with his new wifey.
