The Achievement Gap in our Classes Lone Star College October 2018 Workshop

Broadening Participation Need: Goal: Have a good understanding of what our demographics look like in our classes compared to our campuses Recognize discrepancies in our classes and minimize it.

Enrollment Demographics in GEOL1403 for the past 5 Semesters

GEOLOGY DEMOGRAPHICS VS SYSTEM

African-American Enrollment in our Classes Graphs show what percent of our geology classes are made up of a certain demographic relative to what percent that demographic makes up of each of our campuses. Hispanic Enrollment in our Classes

Female Enrollment in our Classes

Broadening Participation Need: Strategies: Fewer women and African- American students are enrolling in our classes relative to the college population Meet with advisors To make them aware of geology and greater success rate over other sciences for Gen Ed students To create micro-campaigns to encourage enrollment in geology (e.g., focus on those enrolled that have not taken a science class) Work with curriculum team to align our math requirements with current math pathways (make us more accessible than other sciences) Meet with high schools Create and share a brochure about our geology program Collaborate with National Association for Black Geoscientists to talk to high school classes Goal: Short term: Move the needle in the right direction Long-term: Come within 2% of our college’s demographics

Success of All Students Need: Goal: A clear view of who is successful in our classes Minimizing the difference in success across the demographics

Success of Students broken down by Demographics (Success = A,B,C, or P) Succcess: ABC or P

25 31 26 21 26 23 23 18 19 18 43 38 35 35 35 Percent is % of that demographic enrolled Labels are the percent of that demographic enrolled that were not successful

GPA For Different Demographics. Number labels = number of students 65 15 96 15 11 63 91 50 60 67 92 78 91 44 95 22 20 6 89 19 23 11 20 23 27 17 18 17 103 47 GPA For Different Demographics. Number labels = number of students 17 40 67 44 2 68 105 86 73 26 60 66 73 23 50 54 24 21 39 39 5 20 12 67 14 13 6 3 12 5 42 166 60 156 118 107 65 59 79 62 113 60 62 75 86 11 88 64 74 15 13 54 35 26 18 26 68 9 12 23

Success of All Students Need: Strategies: Success rate based on GPA of underrepresented minorities is lower than Caucasian students Adjuncts + Full Time: Increase workshop participation Expose them to the achievement gap Provide strategies for an inclusive classroom Create more active learning ready-made strategies to use in their classrooms Goal: Increase success rate by an average of 0.5 GPA points

Strand 3: Increasing Professional Pathways Need: Possible Strategies Lack a clear pathway for geoscience majors and future science teachers Continue pathway discussions with University of Houston – Downtown as first articulation agreement Educating advisors on geoscience careers and developing a handout Expand campus geology webpages to include career information, internships, research opportunities, highlight achievements of former students Goal: Develop a guided universal pathway for all neighboring four-year universities

Average GPA for GEOL1403 What are your observations? NOTE: These are the terms that AIR uses for our school.
