Young mice and humans have limited numbers of T cells producing IL-17 (Th17) and IFN-γ (Th1) in the gingiva (left). Dutzan et al. (2017) show that over time, mechanical stress from mastication and tissue damage results in the secretion of IL-6 from epithelial cells, which, via binding to IL-6Ra-gp130, facilitates the accumulation of Th17 cells via increased proliferation (right).
