Paul and Company Directed to Troas and Europe, Acts 16:6-10 Bithynia Mysia Galatia Phrygia Asia Cilicia Syria Paul and Company Directed to Troas and Europe, Acts 16:6-10

Phrygia Acts 2:10; 16:6; 18:23 Dry, barren Denotes an area within the central portion of the peninsula No exact boundaries Mountainous with table-lands reaching 4,000 feet. Laodicea, Hierapolis, Colossae, Iconium, and Antioch of Pisdia are within Phrygia

Galatia Acts 16:6; 18:23; I Peter 1:1 Named after the Celtic tribes (Gaul's) that migrated there about 280 BC. A Roman province in the central portion of the peninsula A fertile land on major trade routes. Antioch of Pisdia was the first Galatian city where Paul preached the gospel (Acts 13:16ff)

Go Where the Gospel is Wanted Acts 16:1-10 Take it to new places, Romans 15:20-22 Go with faithful men, 15:40; 16:1-2 (2 Timothy 1:5; 3:15) Remove potential impediments, 16:3-4; 1 Corinthians 9:19-23 Go where the pressing need and interest exists, 16:6-10 Romans 15:20-21 - 20 yea, making it my aim so to preach the gospel, not where Christ was (already) named, that I might not build upon another man's foundation; 21 but, as it is written, They shall see, to whom no tidings of him came, And they who have not heard shall understand. Acts 15:40 - but Paul choose Silas, and went forth, being commended by the brethren to the grace of the Lord. Acts 16:1-2 - 16 And he came also to Derbe and to Lystra: and behold, a certain disciple was there, named Timothy, the son of a Jewess that believed; but his father was a Greek. 2 The same was well reported of by the brethren that were at Lystra and Iconium. II Timothy 1:5 - having been reminded of the unfeigned faith that is in thee; which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and, I am persuaded, in thee also. II Timothy 3:15 - And that from a babe thou hast known the sacred writings which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. Acts 16:3-4 –3 Him would Paul have to go forth with him; and he took and circumcised him because of the Jews that were in those parts: for they all knew that his father was a Greek. 4 And as they went on their way through the cities, they delivered them the decrees to keep which had been ordained of the apostles and elders that were at Jerusalem. I Corinthians 9:19-23 - 19 For though I was free from all (men,) I brought myself under bondage to all, that I might gain the more. 20 And to the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain Jews; to them that are under the law, as under the law, not being myself under the law, that I might gain them that are under the law; 21 to them that are without law, as without law, not being without law to God, but under law to Christ, that I might gain them that are without law. 22 To the weak I became weak, that I might gain the weak: I am become all things to all men, that I may by all means save some. 23 And I do all things for the gospel's sake, that I may be a joint partaker thereof. Acts 16:6-10 - 6 And they went through the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been forbidden of the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia; 7 and when they were come over against Mysia, they assayed to go into Bithynia; and the Spirit of Jesus suffered them not; 8 and passing by Mysia, they came down to Troas. 9 And a vision appeared to Paul in the night: There was a man of Macedonia standing, beseeching him, and saying, Come over into Macedonia, and help us. 10 And when he had seen the vision, straightway we sought to go forth into Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them. Acts 16:8, 10 – 8 and passing by Mysia, they came down to Troas … 10 And when he had seen the vision, straightway we sought to go forth into Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them. Luke joined the group in Troas 16:8, 10

Bithynia Acts 16:6; I Peter 1:1 A Roman province in northeast Asia Minor. Bypassed at this time because of divine prohibition but preached in later. Rugged mountains and fertile valleys sloping toward the Black Sea. Pliny wrote of the Christians in Bithynia around 112 AD. The city of Nicaea is located in Bithynia.

Mysia Acts 16:6-7 A relatively undefined region in northwest Asia Minor. The preachers passed through this area being prohibited to go to Asia or Bithynia. Troas was the chief port city. Assos (Acts 20:13-14) and Adramyttium (Acts 27:2) are nominally in Mysia.

Troas Acts 16:8; 20:5-12; II Corinthians 2:12 The chief city in the northwest of Asia Minor and a major port. A Roman “colony” This gave its citizens much freedom and they were exempt from poll and land taxes. The ruins of Troy are just a few miles north.

Samothrace Acts 16:11 A mountainous island in the Aegean Sea. Its highest peak is over 5,000 feet. Mentioned in the Iliad as the seat of Poseidon.

Neapolis Acts 16:11 The sea-port for the inland city of Philippi. A temple of Diana was on the hill-top above the town.
