Dates Trip A: LHB & AG All students in 10B & 10C2 will be going on the trip Saturday 8th September to Tuesday 11th September 2018 Trip B: LHB & AN All students in 10A & 10C1 will be going on the trip Saturday 15th September to Tuesday 18th September 2018

Accommodation Pen Y Pass Youth Hostel Caernarfon, Gwynedd, LL55 4NY Full board Some rooms are en suite Rooms sleep 2-8 students Drying room

Itinerary (same for both trips) Saturday 8th September Depart FBA @ 8am travel by coach to Shrewsbury with a scheduled stop at either Watford Gap/Corley services. Shrewsbury – to investigate flooding along the River Severn. You will have lunch here (bring your own packed lunch for first day only) Depart Shrewsbury to travel to the YHA Pen-y-Pass. Upon arrival at the Youth hostel students will be allocated rooms and then we will have our evening meal. Sunday 9th September Breakfast & depart YHA. In the morning students will complete river fieldwork activities on the Afon Glasyn river at a range of points. In the afternoon they will complete village fieldwork in Beddgelert in the afternoon. Packed lunch provided. Dinner at YHA Monday 10th September Breakfast & depart YHA. In the morning students will investigate; How did ice shape the land in the Nant Ffrancon valley? In the afternoon students will complete village fieldwork in the second village Llanberis. Packed lunch provided. Dinner at YHA. Evening activities: Students and staff to walk from YHA along the Miners path towards Llyn Llydaw and Llyn Teyra. Followed by packing. Tuesday 11th September Breakfast & depart YHA to drive to Birmingham. Packed lunch provided. Upon arrival in Birmingham the students will visit a range of sites in the city centre to investigate the quality of urban life and environmental quality in the city centre. Depart Birmingham for FBA ETA to be advised en route depending upon traffic conditions.

What to bring: Day bag Students must have: Ruck sack Waterproof coat, Packed lunch for the first day only, Water bottle, Medications such as asthma pumps, Clipboard, Writing equipment, Fieldwork booklet (these will be given out on the morning of the trip) Camera/phone (these are the responsibility of the students to look after) A small amount of money. Antibacterial gel. Plastic bags Bin bags

What to bring: Main bag A few pairs of Lightweight trousers (no jeans) Waterproof trousers A mixture of long and short sleeved t shirts Jumpers & fleece Hat, scarf & gloves Socks Walking boots/shoes Wellington boots (for river fieldwork)

What to bring: Main bag Towels Trainers/change of shoes for inside Youth Hostel no sliders Toiletries Snacks Nightwear Underwear Change for the payphone

Risk Assessment Travel: Seatbelts must be worn at all times Students must not get out of their seats whilst the coach is in motion. Students must not eat or drink fizzy drinks on the coach unless they are given permission- water is fine. Must be quiet so they do not disturb the driver. Luggage must be stored in the seat area or in the overhead compartment. Walking: Students must ensure they are suitably dressed for the weather conditions e.g. warm, dry and windproof Must be wearing sturdy footwear e.g. walking boots Must follow the path taken by the lead member of staff They should not wander off at any time on their own. Be aware that paths may be uneven and slippery when wet.

Risk Assessment Accommodation: Students must not leave the YHA without a teacher present. Students must check the location of their nearest fire exit – the meeting point is the car park across the road. They must ensure they stay in their allocated room and lock this at night Must be quiet during the hours of 11pm-7am so they do not disturb other visitors. Rooms must be kept tidy to reduce the risk of tripping over. Items left in the drying room are left their at your own risk. General: Students must following all instructions straight away. Students are responsible for all of their personal belongings Must be careful when using fieldwork equipment to reduce the likelihood of injury During free time, students must be in groups of 4 at all times.

Things to be aware of Mobile phones will have poor reception in this area. There is a payphone in the Youth Hostel. The motto is ‘no news is good news’ All fieldwork activities are subject to weather conditions we will endeavour to follow the itinerary but it may be necessary to make amendments to ensure the safety of all students.
