STUDENTS OUTSIDE OF EU

Visas Short-term stay Long-stay visa C-type or visa free regime Allows to stay in Schengen area for 90 days within 180 days Can be applied for in embassies only D-type visa Allows to stay in Estonia for up to 365 days within 12 month Can be applied for in Estonian embassies only or at the PBGB (Tallinn, Tartu, Pärnu, Jõhvi, Narva) M

Staying in Estonia with a C- or D-type visa or visa free status Have a right to study in Estonia If your visa was issued for studying, then you are allowed to work in Estonia! NB! But your main purpose in Estonia is to study! M

Which base to choose? General rule is, that if your stay lasts for up to 1 year, you apply for a long-stay (D-type) visa If you need to stay in Estonia for longer, then you need a temporary residence permit

How to apply for a residence permit? If You are staying in Estonia with a visa free status or You have a visa, then You can apply for a residence permit at the PBGB service point: https://www2.politsei.ee/en/kontakt/kmb/ Reception: Mon-Fri Prebook required: https://broneering.politsei.ee/ or by phone 612 3000! Application needs to be presented personally Hand in the application immediately, do not wait until the end of Your right to stay, because then You will be obliged to leave the country! Processing time up to 2 months (from the acceptance of the application or from the last submitted documents) A

Applicants’ confirmations By signing the application You confirm that: Data presented is not false You have concluded an insurance contract - (Some examples from Estonia: Inges, ERGO, Salva) You have sufficent legal income 280€ per month PBGB has the right to ask additional documents (included documents about legal income and insurance contract) A

Residence permit for study Residence permit for study can be issued for nominal study time, but not longer than 5 years If needed the permit can be extended until the end of your studies Residence permit is issued for full time/load study! A

IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER NB! Submitted application for first residence permit does not give you any legal basis to stay in Estonia!!! After receiving Your residence permit, You need to register Your place of residence in the population registry within 1 month bring passport and tenancy agreement to the population register Submit application to extend Your temporary residence permit at least 2 months before the end of current residence permit Residence permit cards can be issued at the PBGB and at the Estonian embassy (even when extending the permit) M

Right to work for students with residence permit Students have the right to work during studies – no need for separate work permit! However, students need to continue studying full time/load! Primary purpose for residence is to study! Residence permit can be revoked if student can’t fulfill the curriculum! M

Staying in Estonia after studies After the end of Your residence permit for study, You have a right to stay in Estonia for 270 days (from May 23rd 2018) Does not apply when residence permit is revoked! You will no longer be a resident, this is temporary stay! You can work on this time of periood without additional permits! You have the right to apply for a new temporary residence permit in Estonia – if possible, then do it 2 months before the end of Your current permit. Can apply: For employment (issued for max 5 years) For business (issued for max 5 years) For settling permanently (issued for max 5 years) M
