The Aesthetic use of Language

(1) Describe what you see. Five sentences at least. (2) Write down a description of a nightclub called ‘Paradise’. What do you see, hear, smell, feel and taste.

The objective of this class is: To revise the language of the Aesthetic and it’s guidelines. To recognise what you are looking for and what the examiner is looking for. To be able to use the style for Question A, B and the compositions, if you wish. But first, a small warm-up:

 What this means in this section...

L.O.A. Checklist. Language – 30% : Did it have rich imagery? Was the language intensely visual and did it create a unique image? Did the sound or language reflect the beauty of what was described? Was it powerful, original and harmonious? Did it use rhyme or rhythm? Did the writing capture feelings, sensations and experiences? Did it show the beauty of the world or display strange and exotic pictures?

Purpose – 30%, Coherence – 30% : Try now to answer a question B. on the sheet provided. Remember that a third of you marks simply go for engaging with THE SET TASK (i.e. Understanding what the question is asking) and a third goes for STAYING ON MESSAGE. Note: The difference of narration of the aesthetic is the purpose. The former wants to teach a lesson. The latter want to talk about the beauty of the world.

Homework Focus on your one essay this week to prepare for the exam. Use the notes to check or improve said essay. Next week, hand up the essay you plan to write for the leaving cert.
