17 November 2014 Do now: Why was Fort Duquesne vital for the control of North America? Open your reading to page 136: Late: Choosing sides letter. Today, I will be able to analyze and discuss historical document. I will be able to explain and discuss Franklin’s “Plan of Union” I will be able to identify the strengths of the British and French entering the F & I War.

Advantages Britain France Larger colonial population than France Colonies were along the Coast Had some Indian allies British Navy was the strongest in the world Single government More Indian allies than the British Fought “guerilla” style war

Disadvantages Britain France Not many Indian allies Did not have a single Government Red Coats?? Traditional style of fighting Small colonial population Colonies were widely Scattered Navy not as strong as Britain

General Braddock Commander in Chief of the British forces in N. America. 1755 - Led the attack on Fort Duquesne British troops were ambushed by French & Indians Braddock was killed & buried in the middle of the road. WHY???

Turning Point 1757, William Pitt becomes Prime Minister of England. Sends best generals to North America. Encourages colonists to fight in the war (monetary incentives $$) General Amherst captures Louisbourg, which convinced the Iroquois to side with the British. Iroquois convince the Delaware to abandon Fort Duquesne, British gain control of the POINT.

Fall of Quebec Britain is able to capture the well defended fort that controlled the St. Lawrence River (General Wolfe was the British commander and Marquis de Montcalm was the French commander). Soon after the fall of Quebec the British were able to capture Montreal (1760, the year fighting ends in N. America)

Treaty of Paris 1763 – Ended the war! Who got what? Britain – Canada, all French lands east of the Mississippi River & Florida France – West Indies Spain – all French land west of the Mississippi River including New Orleans.
