Figure 1 SIRT1 integrates nutrient and hormonal cues to modulate induction of the gluconeogenic program During fasting, pancreatic glucagon stimulates expression of PGC-1α in the liver. Elevations in gluconeogenic precursors like pyruvate promote accumulation of SIRT1 protein, which in turn triggers induction of gluconeogenic genes by catalyzing the NAD+-dependent deacetylation of PGC-1α.
