I. Structure of the Nuclear Atom OBJECTIVES: Identify three types of subatomic particles. Describe the basic structure of atoms.

Evolution of the Atomic Model

Subatomic Particles Particle Charge Mass (g) Location Electron (e-) -1 9.11 x 10-28 Proton (p+) +1 1.67 x 10-24 Neutron (no)

Subatomic Particles ATOM NUCLEUS ELECTRONS PROTONS NEUTRONS NEGATIVE CHARGE POSITIVE CHARGE NEUTRAL CHARGE

Atomic Number Atomic number (Z) of an element is the number of protons in the nucleus of each atom of that element. Element # of protons Atomic # (Z) Carbon 6 Phosphorus 15 Gold 79

Mass Number Mass number is the number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an isotope: Mass # = p+ + n0 Nuclide p+ n0 e- Mass # Oxygen - 10 - 33 42 - 31 15

Complete Symbols Contain the symbol of the element, the mass number and the atomic number. Mass number X Superscript → Atomic number Subscript →

Br Symbols 35 80 Find each of these: number of protons number of neutrons number of electrons Atomic number Mass Number

Symbols If an element has an atomic number of 34 and a mass number of 78, what is the: number of protons number of neutrons number of electrons complete symbol

Symbols If an element has 91 protons and 140 neutrons what is the Atomic number Mass number number of electrons complete symbol

Symbols If an element has 78 electrons and 117 neutrons what is the Atomic number Mass number number of protons complete symbol

Atoms vs Ions Atoms are neutral, they have no charge. # of protons (positive) = # of electrons (negative) Ions are formed when atoms gain or lose electrons Cations – positively charged ions that have LOST electrons. Anions – Negatively charged ion that have GAINED electrons.

Ca2+ 40 20 It is positive because it has more protons than electrons Cations Determine the number of protons, neutrons, and electrons in a calcium ion. 40 Ca2+ number of protons number of neutrons number of electrons 20 This is named the “calcium ion”. It is positive because it has more protons than electrons

P 3- 31 15 It is negative because it has more electrons than protons Anions Determine the number of protons, neutrons, and electrons in a phosphide ion. P 31 3- number of protons number of neutrons number of electrons 15 (This is called the “phosphide ion”, and should show dots) It is negative because it has more electrons than protons
