YOUR IDEAS YOUR INITIATIVES Road Safety Actions for a Better Environment Prepared by students of Samara Medical-Technical Lyceum: Veronika Rogozhina and Anastasia Kozochkina Medical Technical Lyceum

The year 2018 is announced to be the year of ecology in Russia that is why the amount of cyclists on the streets has increased because many drivers gave up their vehicles and now use bikes. What’s more, Russia is a host country for the World Cup 2018 and our city is expecting lots of guests and tourists this summer. Many streets in the city center will temporarily be turned into pedestrian ones, allowing even more cyclists to get around.

Because of probable unawareness of tricky moments in the rules between drivers, cyclists and pedestrians, the amount of accidents on the streets might increase. That’s why we decided to introduce the guideline helping to get aware of commonly approved traffic rules for each category of traffic participants. We created an Instagram account in March 2018 in order to attract people’ attention and get them acquainted with road safety rules. https://www.instagram.com/road_safety_smtl

OUR IDEAS I. First of all, we made a partnership with “Velosamara” (it’s a club that unites cyclists in our city and organizes various events) in order to become fully-fledged participants of the club and their organized events.

II. The second event was an open seminar (lection) provided by the representative of “Velosamara” and a traffic cop, during which we got acquainted with basic traffic rules for cyclists and how to behave in complicated cases on the roads. 19th of April. An open public seminar held in Samara Medical Technical Lyceum, Samara, Russia

The opening of the Bicycle season 2018 on the 21st of April III. The other event was an opening of bike season 2018, held on the 21st of April; some students from our school took part in it. This event inspired us to spread accuracy among students from Samara Medical Technical Lyceum, in order to be sure, that our students will be safe while riding a bike. The opening of the Bicycle season 2018 on the 21st of April

The opening of the Bike season 2018 on the 21st of April Main city square, Samara, Russia

OUR INITIATIVES I. We initiated to organize a parking area for cyclists from our school in order to create convenient safekeeping for their bikes, with the support of school authorities. The parking area was set up in the beginning of May

II. After that we developed a bilingual (in English and in Russian) list of easy-to-understand rules to popularize them among students from our lyceum and make them accessible to native and foreign audience, who might be potential cyclists. In this photo our team discusses on topics related to safety on the roads with the students from SMTL

III. To take part in the public meeting organized on the city embankment with the help of “Velosamara” club and traffic police officers, where the modeled situations are expressed in short videos and then popularized among students of our school through social networks and classroom meetings. -to make sure that students from our school are aware of road traffic rules and can be safe on the roads. The event took place on the 19th of May with the support of traffic police and “Velosamara”

Conclusion After collecting, gaining and rearranging all the knowledge about safety on the roads by participating in various events, we were glad to share and popularize it among students from our lyceum. We really hope there will be less accidents on the roads!

We are really grateful to our supervisors and supporters: Roman Eremkin (“Velosamara” Club) Natalia Kabanova (IB DP coordinator) and Nikolai Balykov (CAS teacher)
