For centuries, astronomers learned about the sky by studying the light coming from astronomical objects, first by simply looking at the objects, and later.

ADDITIONAL SLIDE – WHY HUBBLE vs. GROUND-BASED TELESCOPE? Hubble's 25th Anniversary:   Hubble's Views of Star and Cluster Formation Drs. Carol Christian, Antonella Nota, and Brad Whitmore May 7, 2015 ADDITIONAL SLIDE – WHY HUBBLE vs. GROUND-BASED TELESCOPE?

Question - Why does it take HST to make these discoveries ? 2/23/2019 Question - Why does it take HST to make these discoveries ? Answer - Spatial resolution ! Ground-based Hubble - (ACS) Here is a comparison of a star cluster in the Antennae Galaxies observed from the ground and from space with Hubble’s Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS). Hubble’s position above the blurring effects of the atmosphere and its exquisite pointing provides very fine spatial resolution (or the ability to see small details on the sky) – thus, astronomers can discern the stellar population that makes up the star cluster.
