Elements & Their Properties Chapter 19 Elements & Their Properties

Metals Metals are solid at room temperature, shiny, conduct electricity, malleable, and ductile. Malleable—bendable; can be hammered into sheets. Ductile—can be drawn into wires.

Types of Metals Alkali metals are softer than most metals and are very reactive. Alkaline earth metals are used in fireworks and are found in your body. Transition metals are used in pigments, some are magnetic, and some are very good conductors of electricity.

Nonmetals Nonmetals are usually gases or brittle solids or powders at room temperature. They are poor conductors of electricity. Halogens are very reactive and are used in lights and household items such as toothpaste and bleach. Noble gases are unreactive and are used in lights, blimps, and balloons.

Metalloids & Synthetic Elements Metalloids conduct electricity better than nonmetals, but not as well as metals. Synthetic elements do not occur naturally (they are man-made) All elements with an atomic number higher than uranium (92) were made by scientists and most are radioactive.
