In your own words… Define globalization. What comes to your mind? Come up with several specific examples.

Definition Globalization- 1. Process of transformation of local/regional things into global ones. 2. Process by which the people of the world are unified into a single society and function together.

How does it happen? What is included? What is included: international trade, foreign investment, capital(money) flow, migration, and spread of technology How: Combining the economic, technological, cultural, and political forces

Earliest Examples The term “going global” was something different in earlier eras in history. We will travel back in time over 2000 years to see some of the earliest examples

Silk Road:114 BC 5000 miles, overland trade route from East Asia to Europe

Roman Empire: 27 BC At its height, Romans were on three continents. They controlled over 2.3 million sq. miles. Vast system of roads allowed trade to be free flowing through the empire, over 50,000 miles of paved roads.

15th century Exploration Exploration and Western Expansion started by Portuguese and Spanish

19th century British Empire British colonies and territories are worldwide. This is why we have the term “The sun never sets on the British Empire.” All of the colonies were done for the idea of mercantilism.

Positives and Negatives Open markets, finds new customers Brings jobs to people worldwide Lowers the price of goods Spreads cultures Global communication Competition too hard for poorer nations Exploitation of workers Outsourcing can force larger gap in societies Weaker labor unions

Research Find a company you think is “Global” Provide brief history of company Information about products/goods/service Headquarters: location of original store # of employees How are they global? What do they use to find markets and customers? Countries they sell to?
