Literary Enhancer Chapter 7 Justin Harper

"A flurry of wind made the palms talk and the noise seemed very loud now that darkness and silence made it so noticeable." Pg 96 Golding is using personification in this sentence saying that the palms are talking in the darkness of the night. The way he is trying to make nature talk by using personification sets the mood as much more mysterious and spooky.

"He found himself understanding the weariness of this life, where every path was an improvisation..." Pg 81 In this statement, Golding uses a metaphor saying that every path was an improvisation. I think it means that if you take a path, you never know where it will take you and that anything could happen. Ralph sees that life is not easy and could take a sudden turn just like them ending up on the island. He is losing his innocence

" A thin wail of darkness chilled them and set them grabbing for each other." Pg 102 I think what this is another example of personification. The author is saying the wail in the darkness "chilled them." He used the word "chilled" which could also makes me think that the wail gave them goosebumps. The darkness cannot “wail” so it is a human characteristic. It sets the mood as scary and eerie in the darkness for the boys.

"Exposure to the air had bleached the yellow and pink to near white, and transparency. Ralph felt a kind of affectionate reverence for the conch..." Pg 83 The conch is becoming very important to the boys. It shows that's it's becoming their light and comfort. It's conveyed as something sacred and holy for Ralph. The changing colours of the conch show how the rules of the island are slowing changing and the power of the conch is losing it’s appeal
