 What is genetics?  Genetics is the study of heredity, the process in which a parent passes certain genes onto their children. What does that mean?

Genes Observable traits are the result of genes. – Genes are found on the chromosomes in our cells – Each observable trait is determined by two genes,

What are some Phenotypes found in the Harry Potter characters Draco-Malfoy’s comment: Sorcerer’s Stone “All the Weasleys have red hair, freckles, and more children than they can afford.”

AIM: Genetics Do now: What is Gene? What is difference between genotype and phenotype?

The basic units of heredity are called genes Genes are from parents Gene function in pairs  always have two

Genotype: The entire genetic makeup of an organism The actual Gene (allele) Genetic Variation Consists of two letters that represent a gene’s allele

Depends on the interaction of genetic and environmental factors. Phenotype: An organism's appearance or other physically observable traits Depends on the interaction of genetic and environmental factors. Ex: hair color, eye color, sickle cell disease, etc.

A gene can be recessive or dominant. • A recessive gene only shows if the individual has two copies of the recessive gene. For example, the gene for blue eyes is recessive. You need two copies of the gene to have blue eyes.

A dominant gene always shows, even if the individual only has one copy of the gene. For example, the gene for brown eyes is dominant. You only need one copy of the gene to have brown eyes (and two copies will still give you brown eyes!).

Homozygous: a trait is made up of two of the SAME alleles For example) ff, FF, gg, GG, aa, AA Heterozygous: a trait is made of two different alleles. For example) Ff. Gg. Aa. Yy. Bb
