Test Administration Today we are going to look at how to administer Learnia. Hopefully, time will allow us to begin looking at the results. If I am asked, I will come back and show you how to retrieve the results, understand them, and use the information to assist in your instruction. Adrian Allotey Roselle Public Schools

Agenda Learnia Overview The Student Experience Take a Test as a Student Administer a Test Use Key Reports in Learnia This is normally a 3 hour training, but I will go through the features that you will need to administer the test and answer any questions/issues that arose when the math assessment was given. My goals include you leaving with the understanding of the purpose and use of Learnia knowing how to administer the Learnia assessment looking at Leania from the student perspective if time allows, how to generate reports. Introducing learnia Module I It ‘s a pleasure being here today and amongst you all. I will quickly tell you how I got involved in Learnina. Working as a TIM over the summer, I was asked to create a database of all the grade 3-8 students in the district and include in it all the NCLB qualifying information such as lunch status, ESL, and Special Education information. I was glad to get the ball rolling, because in my role as the director of the Include Grant, I have to submit student data on formative assessments. Learnia will be that data. Learnia is a formative assessment system that allows teachers to collect data on their students to adjust and improve their instruction according to their students’ needs. NJ has purchased this tool to help districts assess students in the standards and to move their students to a level of profiencey. Keep in mind that the key in taking these assessments is assessing and analylizing the reports. Copyright © 2008 Pearson Education, Inc. or its affiliate(s). All rights reserved.

Formative Assessment Solution Pre-Built State Benchmark Assessment Reading and Math Grades 3-8 Item Bank Reading Math Science Grades 4 & 8 (January 09) Writing Grades 5-8 (January 09) Assessment and instruction go hand in hand. Using Learnia assessments and reports regularly is a resource to impact instruction and help teachers to differentiate and meet individual student needs; it’s not just another test. Learnia provides various assessments to help determine how proficient students are with state standards. The Pre-built assessments give educators a snapshot or benchmark of where students are at the beginning and of the end of the year. Then the Item Bank allows for follow-up and reassessment throughout the year, offering true formative assessment. All of this would be nothing, though, without the robust reporting that Learnia offers. Copyright © 2008 Pearson Education, Inc. or its affiliate(s). All rights reserved.

Supports Your Instruction Integrates data into the instructional process Allows for differentiated instruction & planning Monitor student progress toward proficiency on NJ standards Copyright © 2008 Pearson Education, Inc. or its affiliate(s). All rights reserved.

Rich Reporting Valid and reliable reports include: NCLB disaggregation Standards based reports District, Building, Teacher, Student, and Parent reports Patented answer rationale with item bank items Copyright © 2008 Pearson Education, Inc. or its affiliate(s). All rights reserved.

How Learnia is Setup This describes how Learnia is setup top to bottom. Learnia is a hierarchy system. Those at the district can see every school and teacher in the district, but a teacher only has access to his/her own students. Reports are available from individual students all the way up to district level reports. These reports can be disaggregated based on NCLB subgroups.  Reports are NOT generated at the state level.  The gray boxes show the roles that exist in each level of the hierarchy. Student Experience Module II In this part, we will see Learnia from the student perspective. I am going to show you the online tutorials that you can share with your students but also so that you know their perspective. Show all. Copyright © 2008 Pearson Education, Inc. or its affiliate(s). Student Portal http://student.learnia.net a) For math test, click a tool to open it. They always appear (all 3) so students would have to know which can be used. If students are not permitted to use tools on state test and they want to practice in that same environment then teacher will have to alert class and monitor use of tools. b) Flag for Review to come back to a question later during this session. Flags are not meant to be saved from session to session. Remind Students to click Finish Later for this exercise. Key Points  Learnia saves each answer as student goes along. If power or Internet connection is lost the data is still saved.  If the Student Portal remains idle for 30 minutes, the system times out. The last answer entered is saved.  Teacher can go back and change status if student submits a test before finishing.  Learnia allows student to see results. However, there are pros and cons to doing so and it’s usually decided at the district or school level. Copyright © 2008 Pearson Education, Inc. or its affiliate(s). All rights reserved.

Test Administration Module III To access Learnia to score tests or create reports, we will use the Admin Portal. each district is handling things a little bit differently to suit the needs of their district. So I am not going to show you everything. Site Code: LN2-607 Name Username Password GraceWJr 17965 Copyright © 2008 Pearson Education, Inc. or its affiliate(s). All rights reserved.

Test Administration Administering a test involves: Printing test tickets Conducting student test administration Restarting finished tests Printing & scoring constructed response items Generating reports & use to impact instruction Now we will begin using Learnia as teachers will be doing on a regular basis.  Prepare to administer a test This includes printing test tickets as well as constructed response items as needed.  Conduct student test administration You may restart submitted tests during this phase and score constructed responses as well as enter results.  Report Test Results Go to tutorial show all Copyright © 2008 Pearson Education, Inc. or its affiliate(s). All rights reserved.

Admin Portal http://admin.learnia.net Now that we’ve acquainted ourselves with Learnia, let’s talk about preparing for a test administration. Preparing to administer a test in Learnia is simple. First, determine delivery method for constructed response items and if necessary, print constructed response items. Then print the test tickets. Exercise 2 Print Constructed Response Items Most tests will have constructed response (also called open ended) items on them. Discuss the two options for students to complete open-ended: 1. Online – Depends on student typing skills and ability to compose directly on screen. Either could interfere with writing or the time it takes to complete a test. In addition, teachers have to score the open-ended on the computer. 2. On paper – The system allows the open-ended questions to be printed separately along with the reading passage. With this option, students can read the reading passage on the computer or paper, and on paper make notes while reading (going along with a test taking strategy students are taught). This option also means less time in the computer lab. Copyright © 2008 Pearson Education, Inc. or its affiliate(s). All rights reserved.
