6-2 Notes: Calvin Cycle

Calvin Cycle Series of reactions that produces C6H12O6 (glucose) 6CO2 + 6H2O → →→→→C6H12O6 (glucose)+ 6O2 Occurs in the stroma

Calvin Cycle Reactants: CO2, and NADPH & ATP (from light rxn)

Calvin Cycle Reactants: CO2, and NADPH & ATP (from light rxn) The energy in ATP is transferred into CO2 rearranging bonds to form C6H12O6 (glucose) Product: Glucose

Calvin Cycle CO2 is the carbon source for C6H12O6 (glucose)

The Fate of Glucose Some will be used for energy (broken down in mitochondria) For growth and development

The Fate of Glucose Some will be used for energy (broken down in mitochondria) For growth and development The unused (excess) will be stored as starch (ex: potatoes)

Photosynthesis and Global Warming CO2 is a greenhouse gas (traps heat)

Photosynthesis and Global Warming CO2 is a greenhouse gas (traps heat) CO2 is currently being released faster than photosynthesis can remove it Burning of fossils fuels

Photosynthesis and Global Warming Deforestation: clearing of forests for farming and human settlements

Photosynthesis and Global Warming 25% of carbon dioxide added to the atmosphere comes from cutting and burning forests in the tropics.

Photosynthesis and Global Warming 25% of carbon dioxide added to the atmosphere comes from cutting and burning forests in the tropics. Grasslands and crops remove 30-60% less CO2 per acre than forests

Photosynthesis and Global Warming Replanting helps: young trees have faster net photosynthetic rates than older trees.
