BASIC GUIDE TO RESEARCH

PRINT RESOURCES Less is more Use brief search terms Try a keyword search first, you will get more results. DON’T JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS TITLE! Use the index in the back of the book.

INTERNET RESOURCES Internet Resources provide quick and helpful links to information but are they accurate? Take a look at these two sites And tell me what you think?

A brief essay on the life and work of Jacopo di Poggibonsi www.umich.edu/~engtt516/index2.html A brief essay on the life and work of Jacopo di Poggibonsi 15th century Artist

WIKIPEDIA…….MY OPINION, USE YOUR BEST JUDGEMENT!

HOW TO USE INTERNET RESEARCH Look for sites that end in .org .edu .gov Always use paid subscription databases if possible! Jstor Ebscohost Facts.com

Paid databases contain published and peer reviewed information Paid Databases vs. Internet Sites Paid databases contain published and peer reviewed information Internet sites can be created by anyone with no regulations or attention to details.

PLAGIARISM GENERAL RULES WHEN IN DOUBT-CITE IT! COPY AND PASTING TEXT FROM THE INTERNET OR DATABASES CAN EASILY BE TRACED!! How can I tell whether I've plagiarized? You need to cite your source, even if: you put all direct quotes in quotation marks you changed the words used by the author into synonyms you completely paraphrased the ideas to which you referred your sentence is mostly made up of your own thoughts, but contains a reference to the author's ideas you mention the author's name in the sentence

DON’T BE AFRAID TO USE A LOT OF DIFFERENT SOURCES! YOU SHOULD ALWAYS BE USING A COMBINATION OF PRINT AND ONLINE RESOURCES. THE MORE SOURCES YOU FIND, THE MORE YOU SHOW YOUR TEACHER THAT YOU HAVE DONE THE RESEARCH! GIVE A BIBLIOGRAPHY PAGE AS WELL AS A WORKED CITED PAGE!

THE LAST RULE OF THUMB DON’T WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ANY QUESTIONS? JUST ASK!!!!!
