Funding Your Vision by Teaching Generosity By Pastor Brian Kluth, Bestselling author/researcher/speaker We have nearly 000 registrants from more than 00 states—literally across the country—and from <other countries>. Just over <00 percent> of you represent churches The other <00 percent> are with <org breakdown>. Whatever your ministry, wherever you’re ministering, thank you for joining us. Teaching generosity changes everything.

What we’ll cover in this webinar: Giving trends and truths 5 truths about tithers and generous givers 7 biblical keys to teach people how to live and give generously 5 ways to grow generous givers and giving The top 3 most expensive mistakes churches make when it comes to teaching generosity

On the video, fast forward to the 4min 55sec mark to sync with the slides (starting with the next slide)

Income and giving trends: 4

Giving statements of regular attendees in the average church: 1/3 give $0/year (statement is blank) 1/3 give <$500/year 1/3 give >$500/year In larger churches with 1,000+: 1/2 give $0/year 1/4 give <$500/year 1/4 give >$500/year Our research shows active “tithers” make up 5–20% of the families, but give 50–80% of all the donations. www.kluth.org/worksheet.htm 5

5 truths about tithers: State of the Plate Research from 4,413 People Who Donate 10%+ www.stateoftheplate.info Majority (64%) started giving 10% or more in their growing up years and 20s. Men and women are equally involved in giving decisions 93% were influenced by others to become generous (e.g., authors, classes, pastors, family) The vast majority of tithers have NOT made plans to honor God in their will/estate plans Christians who give 10% or more… (next slide)

…tithers have healthier finances than Christian non-tithers: 7

Generosity truths to ponder and practices: People are not born generous, and they are not born-again generous. Generosity must be INTENTIONALLY taught and caught. Generosity must be taught because of what you want FOR people–not FROM people. Teaching generosity is first and foremost about spiritual transformation, not just financial transactions. A budget is a spending plan, not the giving goal. Your goal is to teach people to give back TO God with whatever they have received FROM God.

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 7 milestones in people’s generosity journey: Philemon 1:6 You are generous because of your faith. And I am praying that you will really put your generosity to work. SUBMIT yourself and ALL you have to the LORD. 1 STUDY the Scriptures on finances and generosity. 2 SEE what God has provided in your life. 3 SET ASIDE resources to give. 4 SYSTEMATICALLY give to church, ministries, needy. 5 SPONTANEOUSLY give as God prompts you. 6 SIMPLIFY your life to become more generous. 7 9

Poll question: Who or what helped teach you to live more generously? Pastor/Sermons Authors/Books/Devotionals Financial Classes/Courses/Study Parents/Grandparents

How to create a culture of generosity in any church— 5 proven ways to grow generous givers and giving: HOW TO Grow Generous Givers & Giving #1 INSTRUCT with Scriptures #2 INFLUENCE with Resources #3 INVOLVE with Systems #4 INSPIRE with Stories #5 IGNITE with Vision 11

5 proven ways ANY church or ministry ANYWHERE can grow givers and giving: BASIS of your generosity communications is ANCHORED in Scripture, not in budget, building, or bills. 1. INSTRUCT with SCRIPTURES Articles, pamphlets, inserts, web and/or worship videos, classes, cartoons, books, CDs, and 30- or 40-day devotionals (print and/or online) 2. INFLUENCE with RESOURCES Offering plate, box, return envelopes, online, EFT, iPad/Kiosk, GIK, Legacy Clubs CAMPAIGNS: Building/renovations, missions, debt, special programs 3. INVOLVE with COLLECTION SYSTEMS In your generosity communications, share personal stories of those you serve, those who give, and your own generosity journey. 4. INSPIRE with STORIES Funds and resources flow to ministries that meet needs, not needy ministries. Have a future vision and past track record worth supporting. 5. IGNITE with VISION 12

3 most expensive mistakes churches make about generosity: Making the “giving goal” the church budget Not having an INTENTIONAL 12-month multi-faceted plan to inspire generosity and increase giving Relying only, or primarily, on sermons and not using generosity resources that will transform people's giving attitudes and actions
