Journal on Ch. 1 Ralph: (22) Jack: (31) Allegory: a story that conveys ideas and themes through symbolic characters and objects. Ralph: (22) Jack: (31) Symbolizes humans’ instinct to live by rules, act peacefully, follow moral commands, and value the good of the group. Symbolizes humans’ instinct to gratify one’s immediate desires, act violently to obtain supremacy over others, and enforce one’s will. Top of 28: who do you think would suggest they launch the bolder off of the top of the cliff by saying, “Come on” (Golding 28). Why that character?

Journal Continued . . . Symbolizing innocence: choosing not to kill a pig. No kills, no blood, still feel compassion for others and animals (31), so Jack still has some innocence in ch 1. Chapter 2 Prep: Signal Fire: The boys will light a signal fire to attract notice for rescue. When they think it’s important to keep it lit, it symbolizes they want to return to society and all its rules. When they no longer think the signal fire is important, it symbolizes that they no longer want to return to society. They prefer their savage ways on the island.
