Stories of Human Rights ELA Module 1 Unit 1 Lesson 9 Main Ideas in Informational Text: Analyzing a Firsthand Human Rights Account

Learning Targets I can cite example of where human rights were upheld or challenged in “Teaching Nepalis to Read, Plant, and Vote.” I can explain how specific articles of the UDHR relate to this firsthand account.

First read of Paragraphs 1-5: What is this firsthand account about? Today we will close read a firsthand account. Remember our goal for close reading is to pay careful attention to the text, rereading and continuing to think about it deeply. We will chunk this longer text to help us understand it piece by piece. Follow along as I read the first 5 paragraphs.

First read of Paragraphs 1-5: What is this firsthand account about? Reread the first paragraph to yourself. What is this paragraph mostly about? (write your answer in the margin) Repeat this same process for Paragraphs 2-5: Reread Annotate for gist

Second read of Paragraphs 1-5: Annotating for vocabulary related to human rights Remember: Annotating is reading and marking text for a specific purpose. Now we will annotate our text for vocabulary that is related to Human Rights and the UDHR. Listen as I model paragraph 1. Complete paragraphs 2-5 with a partner.

First and second reading of remaining three chunks of text We will repeat that same process for the rest of the text. 1. Follow along as I read paragraphs 5-7. 2. Read for gist and annotate text. 3. Read for vocabulary relating to human rights.
