Developing Listening Techniques

Next Generation Science/Common Core Standards Addressed! CCSS.ELA-Literacy .SL.9-10.4Present information, findings, and supporting evidence clearly, concisely, and logically such that listeners can follow the line of reasoning and the organization, development, substance, and style are appropriate to purpose, audience, and task.

Agriculture, Food and Natural Resource Standards Addressed! CRP.04.02. Produce clear, reasoned and coherent written and visual communication in formal and informal settings. Sample Measurement: The following sample measurement strands are provided to guide the development of measurable activities (at different levels of proficiency) to assess students’ attainment of knowledge and skills related to the above performance indicator. The topics represented by each strand are not all-encompassing. CRP.04.02.02.a. Identify and examine methods for producing clear, reasoned and coherent written and visual communication that are appropriate to the task, purpose and audience (e.g., audience analysis, objective development, etc.)

Terms Attending Bias Hearing Listening Recalling Receiving Understanding

Bell Work! 1. Identify the phases of the listening process. 2. Identify factors that contribute to poor listening. 3. Identify techniques for effective listening.

Interest Approach Try this listening game to see how well your students listen and follow directions. Have them number 1 through 9 on a sheet of paper. Read the instructions below to the students only once, pausing briefly for them to respond.

Interest Approach – This a listening test 1. Write yes, no matter what letter your name begins with. 2. Of the words hammer and nail, write the shorter. 3. Write no even if you think cement is heavier than feathers. 4. Write the numbers 2, 7, 9, 5, and 8 and circle the largest. 5. If you circled 7, make a square; if not, make a cross. 6. If screw drivers screw screws, complete this sentence correctly, “Hammers pound ______.” 7. If 3 times 2 equals 8, make a circle; if not, make two dots. 8. Give the wrong answer to this question: “Does wood come from trees?” 9. If Washington was not the first President of the United States, write the shorter of the words red and green; if he was, sign your name.

Why are good listening skills necessary when communicating with others? Listening is only one part of communication, but it is the basis for successful communication.

Why are good listening skills necessary when communicating with others? If you do not listen closely to the communicator, part of the message may be lost. The listener is responsible for making the effort to understand the message. Listening and hearing are not the same.

Hearing is the physical process of detecting sound. Why are good listening skills necessary when communicating with others? Hearing is the physical process of detecting sound. Hearing involves receiving sound waves through your ears and transmitting them to your brain. Hearing is the first step of listening. In general, the listener hears only 70% of the message and remembers 50% or less.

What is the process to follow in proper listening? Listening is an active process requiring four phases: receiving, attending, understanding, and recalling.

What is the process to follow in proper listening? The first phase of listening is Receiving or hearing 1. Receiving begins by paying attention to the speaker. 2. Concentrate on the message rather than the speaker. 3. Consciously focus on what is being said.

What is the process to follow in proper listening? The second phase is called Attending or the desire or interest to listen. 1. Your present motivation, beliefs, and attitude affect how attentive you are. 2. The power and authority of the message source can also influence your attentiveness. 3. The environment or setting can also be an influential item.

What is the process to follow in proper listening? The third phase in the listening process is called understanding. 1. Understanding is your interpretation of the message. 2. Interpreting the message is best accomplished by putting it in your own words. 3. Because you think faster than someone can talk, you have time to process and organize information while you are listening.

What is the process to follow in proper listening? The fourth phase of listening is called Recalling or remembering what was said. 1. You hear much more than you can remember. 2. You have to develop a technique of remembering the important things and discarding the other.

What factors can lead to poor listening? Several factors can lead to poor listening.

What factors can lead to poor listening? Tuning out is when you hear someone but you are not listening to them. 1. You may not listen if you are not interested. 2. This can be done intentionally and unintentionally.

What factors can lead to poor listening? Interrupting the speaker while he or she is speaking, completing the speaker’s sentence for him or her, poor eye contact with the speaker, or doing other things while the speaker is talking can prevent you from receiving the entire message.

What factors can lead to poor listening? Prejudice or Bias opinions can result in poor listening. 1. If you do not like what the person is saying, it is natural to sometimes not listen. 2. Try to avoid jumping to conclusions.

What factors can lead to poor listening? Poor hearing conditions can affect listening ability.

What factors can lead to poor listening? Language and vocabulary problems can cause poor listening. 1. You must be able to understand the language in order to listen. 2. Good understanding of the vocabulary is important to get the precise meaning of the conversation. 3. If you do not understand a word, do not be embarrassed to ask.

What factors can lead to poor listening? Lack of effort can result in poor listening. Listening is an active process and requires effort. Information overload is when the presenter gives too much information at one time. Too much information can cause the mind to wander and lead to poor listening.

What factors can lead to poor listening? Incorrect assumptions can lead to poor listening. 1. If the listener decides that the message is too complicated, he or she may not try to understand it. 2. The listener might make the assumption that he or she has already heard the message and then tune it out.

What can you do to improve your listening skills? Improving listening skills begins with the desire to do so. There are several techniques that can improve listening skills.

What can you do to improve your listening skills? Prepare yourself for listening. 1. Stop talking; you cannot listen if you are talking. 2. Remove all distractions.

What can you do to improve your listening skills? Listen with the intent to understand. 1. Do not worry about how you will respond. 2. Pay attention to the nonverbal signs. 3. Ask questions or repeat the message.

What can you do to improve your listening skills? Control your emotions. This helps to prevent confusion. 1. Have patience. 2. Control your temper and avoid an argument.

What can you do to improve your listening skills? Practice mental flexibility. 1. Think ahead of the speaker. 2. Relate the message to similar experiences. 3. Try to weigh the evidence.

What can you do to improve your listening skills? Concentrate on the speaker by clearing all thoughts and feelings from your mind. Understand the goal of the listening situation. 1. This will help you determine how to listen. 2. Are you listening for enjoyment or for evaluation?

What can you do to improve your listening skills? Hear the person completely before responding. Use acknowledgment to confirm understanding. Restating the message as you hear it allows the speaker to clarify any misunderstandings.

What can you do to improve your listening skills? Take notes so that you listen more actively.

What can you do to improve your listening skills? Organize the information as you hear it. 1. Listen for the speaker’s key points in the message.

What can you do to improve your listening skills? Recognize common patterns of organizing information When chronological order is used, the speaker will use terms such as “first, next, then.” Where order of importance is used, the speaker will begin with the most important topic and end with the least important

What can you do to improve your listening skills? When comparison and contrast is used, the speaker will use terms such as “similar, like, different, in contrast.” When cause and effect is used, the speaker will use terms such as “because, so, therefore”.

Review/Summary Why are good listening skills necessary? What is the process to follow in proper listening? List and explain the factors that can lead to poor listening? In what ways can incorrect assumptions lead to poor listening? What can be done to improve listening skills?

The End!
