Endocrine Glands Pineal Gland: a very small gland that performs most of it’s function between 0-7 years After 7 the gland shrinks in a process called involution The gland produces serotonin at day, melatonin at night

Thyroid Gland The gland is made of thyroid follicles that produce (T3) triiodothyronine, (T4) thyroxine and calcitonin (T3) & (T4): work together to raise heat production, secreation increases during winter, also very important in fetal growth Calcitonin: increases Ca2+ storage in bone

Parathyroid Produces parathyroid hormone (PTH) PTH: promotes bone breakdown when blood Ca2+ is low

Adrenal Glands Adrenal medulla: is not fully formed until age three Produces 85% of epinephrine in the body Epinephrine: releases high-energy fuels such as fats and Glucose It also inhibits insulin so glucose is not needlessly burned

Adrenal Glands Adrenal Cortex produces three hormones Mineralocorticoids: electrolyte balance Glucocorticoids: promotes fat burning Sex steroids: produces weak androgens that the building blocks for testosterone and estrogen
