Figure 3 Pathogenic model of PBC. The mitochondrial antigen, PDC-E2, which is in biliary epithelial cell apoptotic blebs, is presented to immune cells. Immune complexes form, leading to expansion of autoreactive immune cells that target the biliary epithelia and cause chronic inflammation, cholestasis, and fibrosis.
