CHAPTER 20 LESSON 1 THE HEALTH RISKS OF TOBACCO USE

TOBACCO TOBACCO PRODUCTS ARE MADE FROM THE LEAVES OF TOBACCO PLANTS, WHICH CONTAIN NICOTINE. NICOTINE-THE ADDICITIVE DRUG FOUND IN TOBACCO LEAVES. -IT RAISES BLOOD PRESSURE, INCREASES HEART RATE, AND CONTRIBUTES TO HEART DISEASE AND STROKE. -IT IS CLASSIFIED AS A STIMULANT STIMULANT- A DRUG THAT INCREASES THE ACTION OF THE CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM, THE HEART, AND OTHER ORGANS.

CARCINOGENS IN A CIGARETTE                                                                                THE MOST DANGEROUS ARE TAR AND CARBON MONOXIDE.

SMOKELESS TOBACCO SMOKELESS TOBACCO- IS TOBACCO THAT IS SNIFFED THROUGH THE NOSE, HELD IN THE MOUTH, OR CHEWED. -IT CONTAINS 28 CARCINOGENS ALL OF THEM ARE ABSORBED IN THE BLOOD. -SINCE IT IS HELD IN THE MOUTH IT DELIVERS BOTH NICOTINE AND THE CARCINOGENS TO THE BODY 2 TO 3 TIMES THAT OF A SINGLE CIGARETTE. -IT CAUSES LEUKOPLAKIA- WHICH IS A THICKENED, WHITE, LEATHERY-LOOKING SPOT ON THE INSIDE OF THE MOUTH THAT CAN DEVELOP INTO ORAL CANCER.

HOW TOBACCO AFFECTS THE BODY SHORT TERM EFFECTS: 1. CHANGE IN BRAIN CHEMISTRY- CAUSING THE BODY TO CRAVE MORE, WITHDRAWL MAY OCCUR 30 MINUTES AFTER TOBACCO USE. (HEADACHES, NERVOUSNESS AND TREMBLING) 2. INCREASED RESPIRATION AND HEART RATE- BREATHING BECOMES MORE DIFFICULT DURING PHYSICAL ACTIVITY. 3. DULLED TASTE BUDS AND REDUCED APPETITE 4. BAD BREATH AND SMELLY HAIR,CLOTHES, AND SKIN

LONG TERM EFFECTS: 1. CHRONIC BRONCHITIS- BUILD UP OF TAR IN THE LUNGS WHICH CAUSE COUGHING AND EXCESSIVE MUCUS SECREATION. 2. EMPHYSEMA- DESTROYS AIR SACS IN THE LUNGS. THIS TYPE OF PERSON USES 80% OF THEIR ENERGY JUST TO BREATH. 3. LUNG CANCER- COULD LEAD TO DEATH. 4. CORONARY HEART DISEASE AND STROKE- NICOTINE CONTRIBUTES TO PLAGUE BUILD UP IN BLOOD VESSELS AND HARDENING OF THE ARTERIES WHICH LEAD TO DISEASES. ARTERIOSCLEROSIS- HARDENING OF THE ARTERIES

OTHER CONSEQUENCES OF TOBACCO LEGAL CONSEQUENCES- MUST BE 18 YEARS OLD, PROHIBITED ON SCHOOL PROPERTY.(SUSPENDED OR EXPELLED) SOCIAL CONSEQUENCES- SECONDHAND SMOKE IS OFFENSIVE, HAVE BAD BREATH, YELLOWED TEETH, STAINED FINGERS. FINANCIAL CONSEQUENCES- SMOKING A PACK A DAY COSTS BETWEEN $2000 AND $3000 A YEAR.

FAST FACTS -ONE CIGAR CONTAINS AS MUCH NICOTINE AS A PACK OF CIGARETTES. -PIPE AND CIGAR SMOKERS HAVE AN INCREASED RISK OF DEVELOPING CANCERS OF THE LIP, MOUTH AND THROAT.                                  -IMPORTED CIGARETTES HAVE 2-3 TIMES MORE TAR AND NICOTINE THAN AMERICAN CIGARETTES.
