Chapter 5 Lesson 1 Earth Pages 202-209

The Earth’s surface has many natural features called landforms.

These landforms are shaped by wind and water. That’s called erosion.

As water flows quickly downhill, it carries with it soil As water flows quickly downhill, it carries with it soil. When the water slows and empties into an ocean, it forms a delta.

How a delta is formed.

A drainage basin is the area of land drained by flowing water. We live in the Susquehanna River drainage basin.

There are features on the floor of the ocean as well There are features on the floor of the ocean as well. There are underwater mountains, trenches, and volcanoes.

Scientists have divided the interior of the Earth into four main layers.

The crust is brittle and can crack easily The crust is brittle and can crack easily. Earth’s landforms and underwater features are found on the crust. crust

The mantle is solid, but can move or change shape at high pressure and temperatures.

The outer core is made mostly of melted iron.

The inner core is the hottest part of Earth The inner core is the hottest part of Earth. It is probably made of iron. inner core
