AIM: What is the Chemistry of Life? DO NOW Write down 5 things that are used to make the Empire State Building Do now: Turn in Hw Packet 1 Collect Hw Packet 2 AIM: What is the Chemistry of Life?

1) What is Chemistry? Chemistry is the science of studying atoms, molecules and their interaction between each other.

2) Why do I need to study Chemistry if this is a Biology class? All living thing are made up of atoms and molecules. Inside every living thing, chemical reactions are taking place. Without chemistry, living things cannot survive.

3) What is an Atom? 3) An Atom is the smallest part of matter. It is the building block of all matter. Matter refers to anything that takes up space.

How small are atoms? About 10,000,000 atoms would fit in the thickness of a dime.

4) There are 3 states of matter Solid Liquid c. Gas

5) What is an Atom made of? 5) Atoms are made up of three tiny parts- A) Protons- which have a positive charge B) Electrons – which has a negative charge C) Neutrons – Which have no charge.

What is an Atom made of? Cont. Protons and neutrons are located in the center of the atom called the nucleus. The electron revolves around the nucleus. + -

5) What is an Atom made of? Cont. Different types of atoms are based on the different numbers of electrons, protons and neutrons. Example: Hydrogen is made up of 1 proton, 1 electron and 0 neutron. Oxygen is made up of 8 electrons, 8 protons and 8 neutrons

6) What is an Elements ? 6) Elements are substances that consist of only one type of atom. Example: The element Carbon contains only one type of atom. 6 electrons, 6 protons and 6 neutrons. There are 92 elements that occur (exist) in nature.

Tin - Sn Gold - Au Silver -Ag Aluminum - Al Carbon - C Copper - Cu Gold - Au Silver -Ag Aluminum - Al Carbon - C

7) What is a Molecule? 7) Molecules are substances that combines 2 or more atoms. Example: Carbon Dioxide contains 1 carbon and 2 Oxygen atoms.

8) Atoms and Molecules you are responsible for. Oxygen – O2 Carbon dioxide – CO2 Water – H2O Glucose – C6H12O6 Salt - NaCl

9) What are Chemical Reactions? 9) Atoms in a compound are held together by bonds (bonds are the force (attractions) that causes atoms to “stick” together) When a bond is broken, the atoms that were sharing the bond are free to combine with other atoms.

Reaction (continued) Because molecules can be broken apart and rearranged – there is an endless number of combinations that can be made. This rearrangement of atoms is known as a chemical reaction.

10) Reactant and Products 10) In chemical reactions you usually begin with something and because you add or subtract something you end with something different than what you started. Example Glucose (sugar) + Oxygen makes Carbon dioxide + water C6H12O6 + 6O2 6CO2 + 6H2O** No atoms are destroyed or created!!! There are 6 carbon, 18 oxygen and 12 hydrogen
