Asking the Right Questions In our quest for truth, we learn by asking meaningful questions. Some questions may not have easy answers, and some answers from God’s word won’t be what we are looking for, but they will be right! We must always respect the authority of God’s word as we seek for knowledge, understanding, and application. We must be cautious about asking unnecessary, insincere, or offensive questions. Our ability to ask the right questions will be determined by our desire for truth and by our humility.
Things to remember when seeking answers from God’s word: Some questions may not have readily understandable answers (2 Peter 3:16) Questioning God's authority is inappropriate (Romans 9:20) Some of God’s answers will not be what we're looking for, but they will be RIGHT! (Psalm 119:128) If you never ask, you may never know (Luke 9:44-45; Mark 9:31-32)
Why Ask Questions? To gain knowledge. (1 Corinthians 14:35; 1 Peter 2:2; Proverbs 15:14; 18:15; Acts 8:34; John 9:2; Matthew 17:10) To understand the meaning of what we've learned. (Luke 8:4-15) For application -- to self! (Luke 3:10, 14) To test for accuracy (Galatians 1:8-9; 1 Thessalonians 5:21 ; Acts 17:11).
Questionable Questions Unneeded questions (1 Timothy 1:4; 2 Timothy 2:23; Titus 3:9) Insincere questions (Matthew 12:10; 22:35- 36; Mark 10:2, 17; Luke 20:21-22; 17:20-21) Potentially offensive questions (Ephesians 4:32; 1 Corinthians 10:31-32; John 8:39-47; Galatians 4:16; Matthew 15:12-14)
An outcome of two things: Our desire for truth (Proverbs 23:23) Our humility
