Connectives A word/short phrase that connects phrases, clauses or individual words.

Starter – why is this so boring? I left my house at 7am. I got into my car and switched on the radio. I can’t stand Nick Grimshaw and it was his voice blaring out of the stereo at me. I quickly switched him off. The car wouldn’t start at first and I tried everything. I switched it off, counted to one hundred (as much to calm myself down as to make the car work), and tried again. It started and I was on my way.

Objective To understand how to use connectives to improve the structure of our writing and make it more engaging for the reader.

Use the connectives in the box to make the paragraph more interesting Use the connectives in the box to make the paragraph more interesting. Change any words/punctuation you need to so it makes sense. I left my house at 7am. I got into my car and switched on the radio. Consequences In groups of 6: You will start by copying the sentence from the board into your books and finishing it (so it must end with either a full stop, question mark, exclamation mark or ellipsis). Your book will then be passed along to the next person in your group. Each time you get a new piece of paper you must use the connective on the board to start your sentence and continue the story. Let’s play!

Feedback some of the stories. What was the effect of adding the connectives? Were they easy or difficult to use? Explain your answer. Which group created the best story and why?

Plenary Draw a brain in your book. Fill it with everything you have learnt about connectives.

Week 2 Connectives are used in different ways. For example, they can be used to show comparisons and contrasts. Name as many words to say ‘similarly’ and ‘in contrast’ to your partner as possible in the next 30 seconds! Can you think of any other ways connectives may be used?

Decide which group the connective belongs to by placing them in the correct table in your books. Cause and effect Ordering ideas Summing up Adding points
