Mock exam question. ‘Compare the ways in which poets present particular places in “Two Scavengers” and one other poem.’ To consider: What the places are like and how the poet uses language to bring them to life. What the poet thinks about them and how their language illustrates their feelings. Which poem you prefer and why: WHICH IS MOST EFFECTIVE? GIVE EVIDENCE?

Sense/meaning – what’s it about? Audience/tone. Techniques used. REMEMBER… Sense/meaning – what’s it about? Audience/tone. Techniques used. Intentions of writer. Personal response. …With regard TO THE QUESTION YOU’RE BEING ASKED, so in this case, how does it all related to depiction and perception of place? What’s it like and what does the writer think about it? How might they be using a description of place to talk about something else?

Similarities & differences. “2 Scavengers” “Nothing’s changed” Similarities & differences. S Inequality, social standing, wealth. Critical without anger. Inequality based on race, nostalgia. Anger of poet. Inequality, but different emotions. Once based on wealth the other race. A American middle-class or rich audience. Raise awareness of reality of American Dream in US. Aimed at black audience, but also at white to illustrate suffering. Both trying to reach a broader audience, but 1 trying to send a message, the other asking for solidarity. T Contrast. Imagery (similes). Emphasis on physical. Observational. Personal pronouns. Emphasis on emotion. Use of sarcasm. Internal monologue. Nothings changed in opportunity for both poems. I ALREADY LOOKED AT ABOVE. LOOKED AT ABOVE P UP TO YOU

INTRO: The two poems “Scavengers” and “Nothing’s Changed” both use depictions of place as an analogy for inequality. In other words, not just where you’re physically located, but you’re socially placed in terms of power. For Afrika, this inequality is racially based, whereas for Ferlinghetti, it is based on wealth. Moreover, the poems also differ in tone and the emotions of the poets. Ferlinghetti’s piece observes this inequality from a distance without strong emotion whereas for Afrika, the poem describes a personal experience. This means that his piece has a potent sense of animosity towards those who would continue to discriminate against his ethnic group.
