ESTABLISHING CREDIBILITY What You Frame, How You Frame, and How Others Frame You Dr. Joanne E. Nottingham

Effective communication requires framing and credibility. You do NOT have to be the originator of a vision in order to get credibility. Dr. Joanne E. Nottingham

2 Basic Components of Credibility Competence … is defined as “how experienced, informed, skilled, or intelligent one appears to be.” Trust … is defined as “how honest, open-minded, fair or unselfish one seems.” p. 171 Dr. Joanne E. Nottingham

Believability… your evaluation Is your competence value-added? Does it have competence + expertise? Does your framing assist the problem-solving process? Do you facilitate better understanding? Is there increased quality or efficiency of the problem-solving process? Do you have a vision? Can you cause communication before its time? Do you earn the respect of others through a unique capacity to envision better? Dr. Joanne E. Nottingham

Recognize the importance of speaking style on your framing and believability. Dr. Joanne E. Nottingham

Believability Frames Establish the function of the frame and When to use it or not, depending on the type of frame: Truth Reality Objectivity Legitimacy Dr. Joanne E. Nottingham

Remember your image and use impression management (framing yourself). p. 174 Dr. Joanne E. Nottingham

3 Factors that Influence Believability 1. What you frame. 2. How you frame. Which is influenced by your speaking style. 3. How others frame you. Which is influenced by others’ perceptions of you. Dr. Joanne E. Nottingham
