Academic Reading and Annotation

Two Kinds of Reading Social reading is reading for pleasure or survival. People and Sports Illustrated Academic reading is reading with a purpose. “Reading furnishes the mind only with the materials for knowledge; it is thinking which makes what we read ours.”—John Locke

Academic Reading Read with a red pen in hand (annotation). Entails carrying on a dialogue with the writer (agreeing, disagreeing, connecting). Many students read passively, not actively.

Two Types of Annotation Internal—inside of the book (questions, clarification, underlining, circling) External—notes include information you can use (left side of note sheet)

Reading Tips Set aside the time to read actively Silence is necessary Monitor reading speed Understand content!!! Be able to explain reading Read widely

The biggest difference between University and High School courses is the demand for increased reading!
