The Proposal to NES Collaborative proposal between University of Dundee with 3 GP Practices and 2 NHS Boards Placements advertised and third year undergraduate nursing students recruited Placement preparation undertaken collaboratively Memorandum of Agreement developed Additional skills negotiated with practices and NHS Boards to prepare students more fully Model developed for support and supervision on practice for students and mentors

Placement Aims To enable nursing students to learn about the roles and function of the GPN To promote and develop a sustainable workforce for the future by showing GPN nursing to be a realistic and attractive career pathway  

Intended Outcomes Nursing students will demonstrate critical appreciation of multidisciplinary and partnership working as well as autonomous working in primary and community care Nursing students will develop appropriate new knowledge and skills relating to the GPN role and the ANP role Nursing students will develop critical understanding of the business culture within a GP practice

Requirements of the project Backfill an experienced nurse working in general practice to work with University and Practice Education Facilitators to lead the development of a student placement model in general practice; Support mentors, supervisors and assessors to provide a sustainable quality learning environment; Backfill member of the nursing team to provide practice learning experiences within the primary and community care setting; Ensure appropriate governance e.g. quality management of the practice learning experience project, raising and escalating concerns and indemnity insurance; Test the model over a one-year period with two 3rd year students who have been selected for their interest in working in Primary Care; Provide a summary report of the placement model; Establish an innovative and viable approach to learning which supports the 2020 vision and demonstrates general practice nursing as an attractive career option; Evaluate the experience and outcome of the placement model Share the findings of the evaluation nationally.  

Evaluation Focus groups on each of the 3 pilot sites as part of a qualitative evaluation Transcripts and field notes to undergo content analysis Data coding Interpretation of findings Dissemination of findings All stakeholders including students will be invited to participate in national conference Publication of findings through journal article and poster presentation
