QA

Lesson 2 QA Starter: LO: Studying verses 8 – 10 Examining Jealousy In Surah Ma`ida which son of a Prophet killed his brother due to Jealousy? “And relate to them the story of the two sons of Adam with truth when they both offered an offering, but it was accepted from one of them and was not accepted from the other. He said: I will most certainly slay you. (The other) said: Allah only accepts from those who guard (against evil)” [5:27] Arabic Translation

When they said: Certainly Yusuf and his brother are dearer to our father than we, They thought Yusuf and Binyamin were loved more – what reasons did we give for this? though we are a (stronger) company; They were arrogant and thought being older and stronger meant they were better most surely our father is in manifest error [12:8] Three things to note from this verse Their father was a prophet – but their arrogance and jealousy made them feel they know better

Studying Verses 8-10 QA Vs 9: اقْتُلُوا يُوسُفَ أَوِ اطْرَحُوهُ أَرْضًا يَخْلُ لَكُمْ وَجْهُ أَبِيكُمْ وَتَكُونُوا مِن بَعْدِهِ قَوْمًا صَالِحِينَ so that your father's regard may be exclusively for you, Slay Yusuf or cast him (forth) into some land, They plotted/planned against him. They wanted to kill their own brother and after that you may be a righteous people. [12:9] They felt by having him out of the picture – they would win their father’s affections They knew they were wrong – as they decided to repent after knowingly committing a heinous crime Three things to note from this verse too

A speaker from among them said: Do not slay Yusuf, and cast him down into the bottom of the pit if you must do (it), (so that) some of the travellers may pick him up. [12:10] One of the brothers was reluctant – he knew it was wrong to get rid of P. Yusuf (as), he managed to stop him from being killed – but gave in to getting rid of him.. Open a discussion on peer pressure – problems, attitudes and solutions (was this a good example of finding a solution if you feel peer pressure?) Can you think of a time when you have felt peer pressure..? What did you do?

They are so lucky I wish I had ..too.. Jealousy Vs Envy They are so lucky I wish I had ..too.. Whats the difference? I want her ice cream and don’t want her to have it ! Or I wish she didn’t have ice cream! I wish we both had big ice creams !

Characteristics? Faith/Piety? Beauty? Knowledge? Money? Plenary QA Group work: What sorts of things do you think it’s ok to be envious of? Characteristics? Suggestions: Faith/Piety? Beauty? Get children to discuss in groups and then bring together for a class discussion NB: Its ok to be envious of anything! (Better if well founded e.g. I wish I had more money like so and so – so that I could help build a hospital in a poor country) Jealousy is the problem  Knowledge? Money?
