Two-Party System Throughout our history, the United States has remained a TWO-PARTY SYSTEM.

What is a political party? A group of people with similar beliefs about how the government should be run.

1789-1797 – George Washington

1789-1797 – George Washington Unanimously elected president in 1788 Never joined a political party Warned against political parties while leaving office. Most of his views leaned Federalists because he thought the young nation needed to be strong to survive.

1797 – 1801 John Adams

1797 – 1801 John Adams 1796 becomes second President. Member of the Federalist Party. Thomas Jefferson is his Vice President. He was a democratic republican. 12th amendment– separate ballots cast for President and Vice – President

1801-1829 Democratic Republican Party

1801-1829 Democratic Republican Party Thomas Jefferson elected President in 1800 as a Democratic Republican (old anti-federalist party) Democratic Republican party won next 6 elections Against War of 1812 Used loose construction to make Louisiana Purchase from France

1828 Andrew Jackson Creates Democratic party and wins 1828 election to become 7th President. Represented the “common man”. Vetoed more laws than any other previous President (12) Used the army to forcibly remove Native Americans from their homelands Threatening to use the army to collect protective tariffs in South Carolina.
