August 13, 2010 Welcome Assignment Take out Planner and get your science notebook Write in planner project due date if you have not done so already Periods 2, 3, 4, 5 = August 16 Monday Period 6 = August 17 Tuesday WEAR COVERED SHOES ON MONDAY AND TUESDAY FOR SCIENCE

Benchmark 7.1.1 Scientific Inquiry Design and safely conduct a scientific investigation to answer a question or test a hypothesis. Benchmark 7.1.2 Explain the importance of replicable trials

Lab Write Up Title – Should tell the reader what the experiment should be about Research Question – Able to be tested by conducting an experiment Background Information – information that might be important to figuring out the answer to the research question Hypothesis – An educated guess that is testable – “If…Then…Because” Format Materials – What items do you need to conduct the experiment? Procedure – What are the steps to conducting the experiment? Data/Observations – What kinds of data need to be collected in order to answer the research question and validate or refute the hypothesis Data/Analysis – What patterns or trends can you see in your data? Conclusion – Was your hypothesis correct? Why or why not? What would you do differently if you were to do it again? What else could you test?

Write name period and date on the upper right hand corner of worksheet Table # will be assigned next week Monday/Tuesday

Title- Ball Drop Bounce Experiment

Research Question: How high will a tennis ball rebound if dropped from 100cm, 70cm, and 50cm, above the classroom floor?

Background Information What you know from lecture notes, research, or observations. What information would be useful to figuring out the answer to the questions?

Hypothesis An educated guess that can be tested What do you think will happen when you bounce the ball at 100cm, 70cm, 50cm? If…..then….because Example: If you drop a ball from 100cm, 70cm, 50cm, then… because… (think about the trend you might see after each trial)

Materials needed What items do you need to conduct the experiment? 1. A tennis ball 2.Meter Stick 3. Tape 4. Pen/pencil 5. Notebook

Procedure How will you conduct the experiment? The procedure is like a recipe, there are steps to follow The steps should be numbered and bulleted Should not have proper names or pronouns (i.e. she, he, them, her, him) 1. Gather materials 2. Set up lab 3. Drop ball from 100cm and record data 4. Repeat for 70cm and 50cm (3x) 5. Clean Up

Data for Ball Drop Experiment Create 3 tables… (3x4) for 100, 70, and 50cm Drop 1 2 3 Drop Height (cm) 100 Bounce height (cm)

August 16 & 17 Welcome assignment – Turn in your Lab Safety Project. Mrs. Lee will enter an “X” immediately onto Snapgrades to indicate if your project is turned in. An “X” means that the work is turned in and will be graded soon. If there is a “0” then the work has not been received and a late form must be filled out in order for it to be accepted. But, it can still be handed in for full credit.

Benchmark 7.1.1 Scientific Inquiry Design and safely conduct a scientific investigation to answer a question or test a hypothesis. Benchmark 7.1.2 Explain the importance of replicable trials

Ball Drop Experiment Duties 1. Everyone Records 2. Watcher 3. Dropper 4. A Time Keeper 5. A Lab Leader (in charge of equipment) Materials needed 1. A Tennis Ball 2.Meter Stick 3. Tape 4. Pen/pencil 5. Notebook

1. Remember tribes agreements when working with team mates. 2 1. Remember tribes agreements when working with team mates. 2. You have 15 minutes to conduct the experiment. 3. Everyone needs to copy data into notebooks after experiment.

Data Analysis -Explain the data in words to show you understand -Use a graph, if its appropriate, to determine if there are patterns and trends (Pie, Bar, Line, Scatter Plot) -Use words to describe patterns or trends that you see in the data, or note that none are present.

Conclusion Use data and your analysis to answer the research question. Compare the results with your hypothesis, is your hypothesis validated or refuted? Were any testing errors during the experiment? What did you learn from the experiment? How can you do better next time? Do you have any new questions/inquiries now that you have finished the experiment?

Ball Drop Debrief Word bank Velocity Gravity Height Speed Potential Energy Which drop did the ball bounce the highest? Why? Which drop did the ball bounce lowest? Why? What else could you test with the ball? Think of How well did you group work together?

Hypothesis Now using your new found knowledge and experience, write a hypothesis to answer the follow question… What do you think will happen when you bounce the ball at ___cm? Remember to write it in the “If…..then….because” format
