The Acts of the Apostles Acts 18 – Fightings, Within And Without Sunday – September 16, 2018

Paul Returns To Antioch (18:18-23) Luke’s description of the last leg of Paul’s second journey is brief … a. Covered in only six verses - Acts 18:18-23 b. Immediately followed by the start of his third journey - Acts 18:23

Paul Returns To Antioch (18:18-23) Paul left Corinth, joined by Aquila and Priscilla – Acts 18:18 With whom Paul had stayed in Corinth – Acts 18:1-3 Mentioned later in several epistles – Romans 16:3; 1Corinthians 16:19; 2 Timothy 4:19

Paul Returns To Antioch (18:18-23) In nearby Cenchreae, Paul cut his hair – Acts 18:18 Cenchreae - a port city, about nine miles from Corinth Home of Phoebe, a servant of the church there – Romans 16:1 Paul had taken a vow, (perhaps the Nazarite vow - cf. Numbers 6:1-21)? As a Jew, Paul had no problems observing certain elements of the Law, understanding it was not necessary to be saved – cf. Acts 21:20-26; 1Corinthians 9:19-23; Galatians 5:4-6

Paul Returns To Antioch (18:18-23) Arriving at Ephesus - Acts 18:19-21 Aquila and Priscilla stayed; they later had a church in their home - cf. 1Corinthians 16:19 Paul “reasoned” with the Jews in the synagogue - cf. Acts 17:1-3 The Jews wanted him to stay longer But he was anxious to get to Jerusalem Some manuscripts indicate it was to keep the feast (Passover - cf. Ramsay) He promised to return, God willing; which he did - cf. Acts 19:1

Paul Returns To Antioch (18:18-23) Arriving at Ephesus - Acts 18:19-21 Apollos is taught the way of the Lord more perfectly by Priscilla and Aquilla (Acts 18:24- 28). He was informed about Jesus, but misinformed as to the subject of baptism, knowing only the baptism of John. (Acts 18:25).
