Presentation transcript:

Policy update for data centres I’m Emma Fryer from techUK. I sit between industry – the data centre industry – and government, or in other words between a rock and a hard place.

What do we do? TechUK provides a collective voice for the digital technology sector in the UK. Our data centre activity sits within that wider landscape. Informing policy Representing the sector in policy dialogue Collating data Setting the record straight: Data Centres and Power Explaining who we are: Data Centres for Tiny Tots Cooperating with other bodies Identifying business risks What I mainly spend my time doing is explaining the sector to people who Don’t understand it Aren’t interested in it But nevertheless have policy responsibility for it.

What have we done? Changed the law Obtained a tax concession for the industry Gained government recognition for the sector Alerted members to a range of business risks Resisted inappropriate regulation Mitigated the adverse effects of regulation Informed the policy process Provided an objective expert stakeholder forum What I mainly spend my time doing is explaining the sector to people who Don’t understand it Aren’t interested in it But nevertheless have policy responsibility for it.
