What are waves? a disturbance that transfers energy from place to place. Classified as either 1. Mechanical- require a medium 2. Electromagnetic- do not.
WHAT ARE WAVES? Wave is a disturbance that transfers energy. Medium(plural media) is a substance through which a wave can travel. The particles of a medium.

What is sound?* Sound begins with a vibration. Sounds travel in waves through a medium.
Waves. Definitions Wave: a disturbance that transfers energy through a medium. The matter does not experience net movement, but vibrates about some rest.

Determine the properties of waves. Learning Target - 1 Determine the properties of waves.

Vocabulary Wave - disturbance that transfers energy from place to place Energy - ability to do work Medium - Material through which a wave travels Mechanical Wave - Waves that require a medium through which to travel.

What kind of wave DOES NOT require a medium? Light '''''''''

Why doesn't the medium travel along with the wave? All mediums are made of tiny particles.  When a wave enters a medium, it transfers energy to the medium's particles.  The particles bump into each other, passing the wave's energy along. Think of how food is passed at the table...

What is a vibration? Repeated back and forth/up and down motion. Started by energy being put into a system.

What is a transverse wave? A mechanical waves are waves that travel perpendicular to an applied force

Parts of a wave Crest – Highest part of a wave Trough – Lowest part of a wave Amplitude – Distance from resting position to crest/trough Wavelength – Crest to crest. Trough to trough

Draw a transverse wave, label the parts.

What is a longitudinal wave? Wave that moves the medium PARALLEL to the direction in which the waves travel.

Parts of a longitudinaal wave Compression – Close parts of a longitudinal wave. Rarefaction – Far apart parts of a longitudinal wave.

Draw a longitudinal wave

What are the basic properties of waves? Amplitude, Wavelength, Frequency, and Speed

What is an amplitude? Maximum distance that the particles of the medium carrying the wave away from their rest positions.

What is the amplitude of a longitudinal wave?

What is wavelength? Distance between two corresponding parts of a wave. Yes, I want you to draw 2 more wavelengths on your wave.

What is the wavelength of a longitudinal wave What is the wavelength of a longitudinal wave? Yes I want you to draw this.

What is frequency? Number of complete waves that pass a given point in a certain amount of time. Yes, draw and label this.

What is frequency measured in? Hertz

Which wave property is directly related to energy? Amplitude

How are wavelength and frequency related? As wavelength increases, the frequency decreases and vice versa.

Wave Speed Speed = Wavelength • Frequency Wavelength = Speed / Frequency Frequency = Speed / Wavelength

1) What are the different types of waves? 3) Draw a compressional wave Whiteboard Time 1) What are the different types of waves? 3) Draw a compressional wave 6. Which wave properties are distances? 5) Can a transverse wave be found in space? 2) Draw a transverse wave 4) What is a medium. List 3 examples of mediums

7) Find the speed of a wave with a wavelength of 5m and a frequency of 68 Hz. 8)Find the wavelength of a soundwave traveling in water with a speed of 1,470 m/s and a frequency of 2,340 Hz. 9) If Mr. Kelly does a cannonball and generates a wave that a wavelength of3.2m and a frequency of0.60 Hz, how fast is the wave moving? 10) An earthquake wave travels at 5000m/sec and has a wavelength of 417 m. What is its frequency?
