General Information The bell rings at 8.55am, so all children should be in class by 9 o’clock. If not, then they will receive a late mark. This can have a significant impact on their learning. Attendance is very important and you should send your child into school whenever possible. High attendance for the class can lead to class rewards. We ask that all children have one water bottle in school. Please buy one with a sports cap. Appointments can be made to see your child’s class teacher straight after school (except Wednesday due to staff meetings.) This is a more convenient time for teachers rather than in the morning when the children are coming into school. Dinner money is collected on a Monday morning. It would be helpful if this was in an envelope labelled with your child’s name. We would encourage children to stay on either a packed lunch or school meal for half a term if possible. Thank you for maintaining the high standards in school uniform, all the children look very smart. We ask that you stand back towards the back of the infant playground, to allow the parents of the younger children to wait closer to their classroom.

Medical If your child requires medication of any kind, a consent form must be completed in the School office. Inhalers need to be labelled and in-date and kept in class. If your child has an inhaler and you have not filled out a form in the office this term, please do so for our new records.

PE P.E. in J1 will take place on Thursday (indoor) and Monday (outdoor). Both classes will be going swimming in the Spring term which replaces indoor PE. P.E. Kits must remain in school and be taken home every half term holiday to be washed. For the outdoor P.E. session, children can bring tracksuits and trainers, depending on the weather. Tracksuits and trainers should be taken home each week. We start P.E. on the first week of each half term, so please ensure that your child brings their kit in on the first day back.

Reading All children will be heard read twice a week in school. Once during guided reading sessions and once on a one to one basis; more if needed. Guided reading focuses on the comprehension of texts, rather than just ‘reading the words’. Every child will have a home reading book and a library book. Throughout the year, children will be encouraged to read across a range of genres as well as reading for enjoyment. We ask that parents / adults read at least three times a week with your child and sign and date their home reading record. We will monitor this when reading in school with your child. We will change reading books as frequently as possible. Now that most children are able to read fluently, it is very important that you ask them questions about what they are reading. Ask the children to clarify the meaning of words, make predictions and summarise what they have read in their own words. This improves comprehension skills and makes reading more enjoyable!

Homework English homework will be handed out on a Monday and should be handed in on Friday. Spellings will be handed out on a Wednesday, with the spelling test taking place on the following Wednesday. Maths homework will be given on a Friday. This must be returned by the following Tuesday. All written homework to be checked and signed by parents please. We will inform children if they have online homework, if you are unable to access the homework online, then there will be an opportunity for your child to complete it in school. As you are aware, there has been a whole school emphasis on times tables. We do encourage times table practise at home. Children will practise times tables throughout the week in school and then complete a times table speed test each week. The National Curriculum states that by the end of Year three all children should know 2, 3, 4, 5, 8 and 10 times tables. 

How you can help? Support your child with their homework, presenting it neatly and completing it on time. Read as much as possible, including all types of reading material. Take time to talk about what they are reading or learning about. Encourage independent research. Help them to learn their spellings and times tables. Practise using time, e.g. reading digital and analogue clocks and durations of journeys, programmes etc. Try to use Microsoft Office, including Powerpoint, as this will help their general ICT skills.
