Liberty, Equality and Fraternity From the “Declaration of the rights of Men” “Men are born and remain free and equal” Used Enlightenment ideas and the U.S. Declaration of Independence as a model.

Rebellion Spreads through France Conditions are poor and people are starving. The peasants are not united, there are many different groups fighting with different ideas  LEADS TO CHAOS and mobs.

National Convention Lead by radical group called the Jacobins A National Convention (39:50) was called in 1792, which officially ended the monarchy and declared France a republic. Lead by radical group called the Jacobins King Louis XVI was tried for treason and was sentenced to death. (January 1793) But now there is still even more rebellion, chaos and a struggle for power. The modern French flag is adopted

Maximilien Robespierre Emerged as the leader of the Committee of Public Safety. Wanted to form a “Republic of Virtue” *HE decides who is an enemy of the republic!

The Reign of Terror July 1793-1794 Aimed at eliminating all radicals, nobles and the church. Robespierre established special revolutionary courts and tried anyone he chose for Treason. No one was safe! 40,000 were executed (2,100 Guillotine) The Reign of Terror ended with his execution on July 28, 1794
