Word of the day Set 7

Commend (verb) Definition: praise formally or officially. Sentence: He was commended by the judge for his courageous actions From Romeo and Juliet: “Commend me to thy lady” (Act 3 Scene 3).

Inundation (noun) Definition: An overwhelming abundance of people or things/Flooding. Sentence: “We see an inundation of campaign posters“ From Romeo and Juliet: “To stop the inundation of her tears” (Act 4 Scene 1).

Ornaments (noun) Definition: A thing used to make something look more attractive but usually having no practical purpose, especially a small object such as a figurine. Sentence: The ornament sparkled from its spot on the Christmas tree. From Romeo and Juliet: “Nurse, will you go with me into my closet/ To help me sort such needful ornaments/ As you think fit to furnish me tomorrow?” (Act 4 Scene 2)

Separated (Noun) Definition:. Cause to move or be apart. Sentence: They separated two rioting mobs. From Romeo and Juliet: “Life and these lips have long been separated” (Act 4 Scene 5).

Unaccustomed (adjective) Definition: Not familiar or usual; out of the ordinary. Sentence: They finished their supper with unaccustomed speed. From Romeo and Juliet: “And all this day and unaccustomed spirit/Lifts me above the ground with cheerful thoughts” (Act 4 Scene 5).

Infectious (Adjective) Definition: A disease or disease-causing organism likely to be transmitted to people, organisms, etc., through the environment. Sentence: The dogs may still be infectious after being treated for rabies. From Romeo and Juliet: “Suspecting that we both were in a house/Where the infectious pestilence did reign/Sealed up the doors, and would not let us forth, So that my speed to Mantua there was stayed” (Act 5 Scene 1).

Ambiguities (noun) Definition: The quality of being open to more than one interpretation; inexactness. Sentence: The students were confused by the ambiguities found in the research. From Romeo and Juliet: “Seal up the mouth of outrage for a while,/ Till we can clear these ambiguities/And know their spring, their head, their true descent” (Act 5 Scene 3).
