Napoleon’s Downfall

Napoleon’s Empire After the Fifth Coalition, Napoleon controlled most of Europe. Even countries not in his empire had been forced into alliances with him. Britain still opposed him. Britain

Continental System Napoleon tried to create a continental boycott to fight Britain. Britain was fine. Europe suffered. People hated Napoleon for it.

Invasion of Russia Russia was secretly trading with Britain. Napoleon invaded Russia with 680,000 soldiers in 1812 The Russian army was annihilated but the winter destroyed the French. 27,000 men returned.

Leipzig – The Battle of Nations Inspired by Napoleon’s defeat in Russia, his German “allies” rose against him. In 1813, the French army met them near Leipzig. The largest battle in history until WW1 (600,000 soldiers) Napoleon was defeated and would be imprisoned the following year.

Elba Napoleon was exiled to this tiny island. He escaped and returned to France, leading a military campaign called the 100 Days against the 7th coalition.

Waterloo In 1815, Napoleon met his final defeat against the forces of the 7th Coaltion at Waterloo. Napoleon’s power vanished after this.

St Helena Napoleon was exiled to this even further island. He would die there in 1821

What did the Revolution achieve? After Napoleon’s defeat: Monarchy is restored The church is restored The nobles move back The central government has considerably greater power than before the revolution Feudalism stays abolished The French think of themselves as French

What did the Revolution achieve? Legacies of the Revolution: End of noble privilege in France. Inspired other nations to pursue democracy. Metric System Code Napoleon Levee en Masse Nationalism

Assignment: Legacy of the French Revolution Key perspectives: Traditional: Napoleon failed because he was overly ambitious and overreached with his Empire. Modern: Napoleon failed because his enemies adopted the 2 things that made Napoleon powerful – Nationalism and the Levee en Masse Hip: The wars of Coalition were ultimately between France and Britain. Napoleon had lost the war before he was even born. Britain already ruled the oceans. Napoleon tried to fight a naval war with land forces.
