Figure 1 Combinatorial Signal Processing in the TGF-β Superfamily Ligand-Receptor Network The graphical representation shows the feasible interactions (undirected lines) between 14 representative ligands of the TGF-β superfamily and the 5 type II and 7 type I receptors. The resulting ligand-receptor complexes phosphorylate the regulatory Smads, which can then participate in transcription regulation of specific genes. Thick orange lines indicate interactions between BMP4 and GDF5 and their corresponding type II and type I receptors.
