BELLWORK 4/3/18

ANSWER – (3) HOMOGENEOUS MIXTURE- also called solutions.

BELLWORK

ANSWER – (A)

SOLUTIONS WHAT IS A SOLUTE? SOLVENT? SOLUTION? A SOLUTION IS ALSO KNOWN AS A ______?

SOLUTIONS SOLUTE – THE SUBSTANCE BEING DISSOLVED; (usually a solid) SOLVENT – THE SUBSTANCE THAT DOES THE DISSOLVING ;(USUALLY WATER) SOLUTION – THE COMBINATION OF A SOLUTE AND THE SOLVENT A SOLUTION IS ALSO KNOWN AS A HOMOGENEOUS MIXTURE

Different Kinds of Solutions Gas solute dissolved in gas solvent: Ex: Air Solid solute dissolved in solid solvent Ex: Alloys (steel) Liquid solute dissolved in liquid solvent Ex: Juice and coke. Gas solute dissolved in liquid solvent: Ex: Sodas Solid solute dissolved in liquid solvent: Ex: Sweet Tea

Solutions Vocabulary Soluble: A substance that will completely dissolve in some solvent (usually water). Insoluble: A substance that will not dissolve in some solvent. Miscible: Substances that mix in all proportions to form a homogeneous mixture. (Ex: Orange juice and cola) Immiscible: Substances in which certain proportions in the mixture do not mix. (Ex: Oil and Water)

Degrees of Saturations When referring to solutions, there are three degrees of saturation—unsaturated, saturated, and supersaturated. If a solution is unsaturated, the solvent is capable of dissolving more solute. When the solution is saturated, the solvent has dissolved the maximum amount of solute that it can at the given temperature. A supersaturated solution is one in which the solvent contains more solute than it can theoretically hold at a given temperature. These solutions are unstable and crystallize readily.

VIDEO – SATURATED SOLUTIONS

WHAT ARE SOLUBILITY CURVES? Solubility curves allow scientists to determine the amount of a solute that can dissolve in 100 grams of water at a given temperature. Slope: A steeper slope reflects more of an affect on solubility as temperature increases.

What factors can affect the rate of solubility? Increasing Temperature of the Solvent Increasing Surface Area of the Solute Agitating a Solution
