Guidelines for Creating Your Seminar PowerPoint Presentation CUNY Start Program

Presentation Outline Major Career Informational Interview The presentation should include information about: Major Career Informational Interview Transfer information to a Senior College Action Plan for students who will work instead of Senior College Something about you, partner/team (But not necessarily on a slide) Professional Organization (optional)

Professional Organization (A bonus!) A professional organization is a club for people who are in the same career or field. You can google professional organizations for the field you are interested in What’s the name of the professional organization you found out about? Can students be memebers? Paraphrase & summarize what they do for their members

Preparing for A Public Speaking Presentation

Basic Steps For Individual Presentations (8 Minutes) Review & organize your information Complete a handwritten draft Choose a PowerPoint (or Google Docs) template Enter information into your slides Proofread Finalize the order your slides Rehearse Put your first & last name on the presentation

Basic Steps for Pairs/Teams – Pt I (10 Minutes) Meet with your partner or team before you all start Review & organize your information Decide who will be responsible for what parts of the presentation Each person should complete their part of the work 2nd meeting with partner/team

Basic Steps for Pairs/Teams – Pt II Choose a PowerPoint (or Google Docs) template One person should put together the slideshow 3rd meeting with partner/team to review the slideshow Proofread Finalize the order your slides Rehearse

Rehearsal Rehearse your presentation in front of a friend Use a timer Let your friend ask you questions (then you’ll know what to anticipate) Speak loudly & clearly Make eye contact with the audience Practice using a Smart Board (and see if your flash drive works) Make sure your presentation has a flow to it – there should be orderly transitions from page to page & from speaker to speaker Individuals will have a total of 8 minutes ( 5-6 minutes for the presentation & 2- 3 minutes for questions) Pairs/Teams will have a total of 10 minutes (7-8 minutes for presentation & 2-3 minutes for questions)

Make it Interesting! (and Informative) Your Advisor & classmates will complete formal evaluations As you go through your presentation, highlight the things that would interest an audience Connect the slides to yourself-personalize the presentation Why did you pick this career/major? What is it about your personality/skills that makes you a good fit for this field? Why do you think this career is even important? If you have classmates in the same major, what will you say to make your presentation stand out?
